SCHIIT BIFROST 3 MODULAR DAC ADDS APP-CONTROLLED VOLUME AND EQ
Schiit Audio has announced the new Schiit Bifrost 3, a modular digital-to-analogue converter that replaces the Bifrost 2.
The new Schiit Bifrost 3 model introduces a different conversion system, app-based system control and a lower price than its predecessor.
The Bifrost 3 can also operate as a simple digital preamplifier, allowing users to control volume and tone from a phone via the included wireless control system.
SCHIIT BIFROST 3 USES NEW SCHIIT MESH CONVERSION
The Bifrost 3 replaces the multibit conversion used in the Bifrost 2 with Schiit’s Mesh system. Digital filtering is handled by a dedicated SHARC processor before the signal is passed to an ESS ES9039 converter chip.
The DAC retains a modular design, allowing input and conversion cards to be changed without replacing the complete unit. Schiit also says that Bifrost 2 owners can install the new Mesh conversion card following a firmware update, although the older model cannot gain all of the Bifrost 3’s new control functions.
FORKBEARD ADDS APP-BASED CONTROL
Forkbeard wireless control is included as standard. The accompanying app provides access to volume, balance, loudness and a five-band parametric equaliser. Forkbeard also supports over-the-air firmware updates.
A conventional infrared remote is supplied alongside the wireless system, providing source selection, phase and mute controls without requiring the app.
CONNECTIONS FOR DIGITAL AND ANALOGUE SYSTEMS
The Bifrost 3 features USB-C, coaxial and optical digital inputs. Its USB-C connection uses Schiit’s Unison 384 interface and supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz, while the optical and coaxial inputs support up to 24-bit/192kHz.
Analogue output is provided through RCA and balanced XLR connections. There is no headphone output or power amplification built in, so a separate headphone amplifier is required for headphone listening, while passive speakers will need an appropriate integrated or power amplifier.
SCHIIT BIFROST 3 PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
The Schiit Bifrost 3 is priced at $699 in black and $729 in silver, with Forkbeard and the infrared remote included, with shipping expected around the end of October 2026.
HiFi PiG says: The Bifrost 3 looks to be an interesting update to Schiit’s modular DAC concept, particularly with the addition of app-based volume and EQ control. The ability to upgrade the Bifrost 2 with the new Mesh conversion card is also worth noting for existing owners.
