DAN CLARK AUDIO AEON CORE BUILDS ON THE AEON LINE

The Aeon series has been part of the Dan Clark Audio range since 2017, offering planar magnetic headphone technology at a more accessible price point than the company’s flagship models. The new Aeon Core continues that approach while introducing updates to driver technology and tuning methodology. The headphones use a closed-back design intended to provide isolation while maintaining a spacious presentation.

DAN CLARK AUDIO AEON CORE FEATURES A NEW PLANAR MAGNETIC DRIVER

At the heart of the Aeon Core is a newly developed planar magnetic driver assembly. Dan Clark Audio says the design focused on three areas: efficiency, tonal consistency and manufacturing reliability. With a sensitivity rating of 97dB/mW, the company states that the headphones can be used with a wider range of portable DAC/headphone amplifiers, dongles and desktop systems than many planar magnetic designs.

The driver uses a new diaphragm material and incorporates the company’s V-Planar technology, which is designed to reduce distortion and improve frequency response performance. A power output of 125mW into 16 ohms is stated as sufficient to drive the headphones, although more powerful amplification may still offer additional headroom.

DAN CLARK AUDIO AEON CORE TUNING

The Aeon Core is also the first headphone from Dan Clark Audio to use a revised tuning target developed from work carried out with Harman researcher Dr Sean Olive. According to the company, changes in industry-standard measurement equipment over recent years prompted the development of an updated reference curve designed to align more closely with the original Harman target.

Dan Clark Audio says this has resulted in a tuning that differs slightly from previous Aeon models, with adjustments to upper bass, lower midrange and upper midrange response. The aim is a balanced presentation that maintains vocal clarity and natural instrument timbre without excessive emphasis in any particular frequency range.

Visually, the Aeon Core adopts a new aluminium and dark wood finish while retaining several design features associated with the Aeon range. These include the company’s Aeon earpads, a lightweight titanium headband and a self-adjusting suspension strap. The headphones weigh 440g, which is relatively light for a planar magnetic design.

The headphones are supplied with a detachable cable and buyers can choose from balanced 4.4mm, 4-pin XLR or 6.35mm/3.5mm terminations. Production takes place at Dan Clark Audio’s facility in San Diego, California, where the company designs and manufactures its headphone range.

DAN CLARK AUDIO AEON CORE PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

Shipping has already commenced from Dan Clark Audio’s California facility, with UK stock expected to arrive at selected retailers from early July through distributor Electromod. The Dan Clark Audio Aeon Core has a recommended retail price of £920 including VAT. UK purchases through authorised retailers are backed by a two-year warranty and UK-based service and support.
