Schiit Magni 6 Offers A Desktop Headphone Amp From $99
Schiit has introduced the Magni 6, a compact headphone amplifier that starts at $99 in the US. An optional built-in Mesh 2 DAC takes the price to $169 and combines digital conversion and headphone amplification in one small box.
For a desk used for both headphones and powered speakers, one practical addition is independent switching for the preamp outputs. That lets you control the speaker feed without unplugging your headphones.

Choose The Version Your Setup Needs
The amplifier-only model is aimed at listeners who already have a suitable analogue source, such as a separate DAC. The optional DAC version adds the conversion needed to turn a digital audio signal into the analogue signal the amplifier uses.
It is worth checking which version you are ordering: the $99 headline price does not include the DAC. Neither version is a power amplifier for passive loudspeakers.

Headphones And Speakers On One Desk
The front panel has buttons for input, gain and preamp-output selection. Gain changes the amplifier’s level of amplification, helping it accommodate headphones with different requirements.
Alongside the conventional 6.35mm headphone socket is a 4.4mm connection using Schiit’s Halo feedback system. The presence of a 4.4mm socket should not be taken as a promise that the whole amplifier uses a balanced circuit.
Schiit rates the output at 3W per channel into 32 ohms. Available power changes with the connected headphones, so that figure is not a universal rating for every pair.
Price And Availability
The Magni 6 is available directly from Schiit, priced at $99 or $169 with the optional Mesh 2 DAC. These are US prices before tax and shipping; buyers elsewhere should check the delivered cost and the correct power-supply option.
What The Terms Mean
DAC: A digital-to-analogue converter turns digital music data into an analogue audio signal.
Preamp Output: A volume-controlled signal for powered speakers or a separate power amplifier. It cannot directly power passive speakers.
Ohms: The unit used to describe electrical impedance. A headphone amplifier’s power rating is normally quoted into a specified impedance.
