Pro-Ject Debut Carbon The Original Brings A £499 Option To Your Vinyl Shortlist

Pro-Ject’s Debut family has a new option for anyone putting together a dedicated vinyl system. The Debut Carbon – The Original arrives with a carbon-fibre tonearm, a fitted moving-magnet cartridge and a UK price of £499.

The focus is on the record-playing hardware. This is a manual turntable, so you place the arm on the record and lift it when the side finishes. It also needs a suitable phono stage elsewhere in your system.

Quick Reference

  • Product: Pro-Ject Debut Carbon – The Original
  • Type: Manual, belt-drive turntable
  • UK Price: £499
  • Speeds: 33⅓ And 45 RPM, With Manual Speed Change
  • Cartridge: Pre-Fitted Pick It S2 MM

A Carbon Arm And A Fitted Cartridge

The one-piece, 8.6-inch carbon-fibre tonearm carries a Pick it S2 MM cartridge, made by Ortofon and supplied pre-adjusted. That removes cartridge installation from the initial job list, although owners should still follow the setup instructions before playing a record.

Under the record sits a 1.7kg steel platter with a felt mat. Pro-Ject also supplies a dust cover, helping keep the playing surface protected between listening sessions.

How It Fits Into A First System

You will need an amplifier and speakers, or suitable powered speakers, plus a moving-magnet phono input. If your amplifier only has ordinary line inputs, an external phono stage goes between it and the turntable.

That distinction matters when budgeting: £499 buys the deck, rather than a complete music system. It makes most sense for someone building a separates setup or replacing a basic turntable while keeping their existing amplification and speakers.

Price And Availability

The announced UK price is £499, with availability scheduled for November. High Gloss Black, Satin Black and real-wood Walnut provide three different looks for the same underlying design.

What The Terms Mean

Belt Drive: A belt transfers rotation from the motor to the platter that supports the record.

MM Cartridge: A moving-magnet cartridge turns movement of the stylus in the groove into a small electrical signal.

Phono Stage: A circuit that boosts and equalises that small signal before it reaches an amplifier’s normal input.
