VOID ANIMISM OBJECTS SPEAKERS BROUGHT JAPANESE CRAFT TECHNIQUES TO LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL 2026
Tokyo-based VOID Inc. presented VOID Animism Objects, a new loudspeaker collection combining contemporary audio design with traditional Japanese materials and artisanal techniques, during London Design Festival 2026.
The VOID Animism Objects Loudspeakers collection brings together technology, craft, material and ritual within its design.

JAPANESE CRAFT AND MATERIALS
VOID Animism Objects draws on three traditional Japanese techniques and materials: Washi, handmade from natural plant fibres; Aizome, the traditional Japanese art of indigo dyeing; and Yakisugi, a woodworking technique in which cedar surfaces are charred to improve durability and fire resistance.

VOID ANIMISM OBJECTS COLLECTION
The first VOID Animism Objects collection is available in three editions: Washi, Aizome and Yakisugi, with each edition limited to 10 sets. The project explores the concept of Animism, described as an understanding that people, nature and objects exist in relationship with one another.
The exhibition also featured garments combining Western and Eastern perspectives, together with mingei folk pottery from Japan’s SAN’IN region. The presentation explored how traditional knowledge and materials could be brought into dialogue with contemporary technology and design.

VOID ANIMISM OBJECTS AT LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL
The speakers were unveiled as part of the Animism Objects – Japan Artisans Design exhibition at Pick Store, Shoreditch, London.
The project was produced by Yusuke Mizobata, Masayuki Inoue and Maika Goto of VOID, with creative direction by Wataru Kiruta of Art Collective Ochill. Product design was by Joe Yoshimura of BREND, with acoustic design by Chiaki Uehira of I/O STUDIO. The listed artisans were Izumo Mingeishi for Washi, Watanabe’s for Aizome and Sakamoto Inc. for Yakisugi.
VOID ANIMISM OBJECTS PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
The first VOID Animism Objects collection comprises Washi, Aizome and Yakisugi editions, each limited to 10 sets. Pricing: TBC.
HiFi PiG says: We thought the Animism Objects collection was an interesting example of how traditional Japanese materials and craftsmanship can be incorporated into contemporary loudspeaker design. The use of Washi, Aizome and Yakisugi gives each edition a distinct material identity, while the limited production of 10 sets per edition makes these particularly unusual additions to the world of HiFi.
