Kanto Tuk Grand And Tuk G2 Powered Speakers Go On Sale

Kanto has released two powered stereo speaker systems with amplification, digital processing, Bluetooth and useful wired connections built in. Tuk G2 is intended for desktops and medium rooms, while Tuk Grand is designed for larger spaces.

Two Powered Speaker Systems

Kanto has put its Tuk Grand and second-generation Tuk powered speakers on sale. Both are complete left-and-right stereo systems with Class-D amplification and digital signal processing built in, so a separate amplifier is not required.

The larger Tuk Grand uses a 6-inch aluminium woofer and a 28 x 35mm Air Motion Transformer tweeter. Kanto quotes 160 watts RMS, 320 watts peak power and a frequency response of 40Hz to 22kHz.

Tuk G2 uses a smaller 5.25-inch aluminium woofer with the same size of tweeter. Its claimed output is 130 watts RMS or 260 watts peak, with a frequency response of 50Hz to 22kHz.

Connections For A First HiFi System

Both systems have USB-C for a computer, optical TOSLINK for a television or streamer, and two RCA inputs for analogue equipment. Bluetooth 5.4 supports aptX Adaptive, AAC and SBC for wireless listening from compatible devices.

The USB-C and optical inputs accept digital audio up to 24-bit/96kHz. A subwoofer output means deeper bass can be added later, while a selectable 80Hz filter can divide bass duties between the speakers and subwoofer.

A turntable can be connected to the RCA inputs if the turntable has a phono stage built in. Otherwise, a separate phono stage is required because the low-level signal from most cartridges needs extra amplification and equalisation.

What The Technical Terms Mean

Powered speakers contain the amplifier needed to drive their speaker units. Class-D describes the efficient amplifier design used here, while DSP means digital signal processing: software-based tuning that helps the drivers and cabinet work together.

An Air Motion Transformer, usually shortened to AMT, is the tweeter that handles high frequencies. Its folded diaphragm moves air differently from the dome tweeters found in many conventional speakers.
