Topping Mini 500 Brings Compact Speaker Power For $229

Topping has launched the Mini 500, a compact Class D amplifier for passive speakers. Priced at $229 in the official store, it could form the centre of a first HiFi system built around a pair of bookshelf speakers and a separate music source.

Despite being called a power amplifier, the Mini 500 includes a front-panel volume knob. You can connect a suitable analogue source and control the listening level on the amp, or bypass that knob when another component handles volume.

Quick Reference

  • Product: Topping Mini 500 speaker amplifier
  • Price: $229 from the official Topping store
  • Stereo power: 220 watts per channel into 4 ohms or 120 watts into 8 ohms, at under 1% THD+N
  • Mono power: up to 450 watts into 2 ohms at under 1% THD+N
  • Inputs: stereo RCA and balanced XLR or 6.35mm TRS
  • Controls: input selection, volume, stereo or mono operation, and 12V trigger
  • Size and weight: 190 x 164 x 44mm; 1.09kg
  • You will need: passive speakers, speaker cables and an analogue music source

A Small Amp For A First System

The Mini 500 takes an analogue music signal and amplifies it to drive speakers. Its aluminium case is small enough for a desk or shelf, with the connections tucked around the back.

RCA sockets let you connect equipment such as a CD player, streamer or DAC with an analogue output. Balanced XLR and TRS connections provide another option for compatible sources. A front switch selects between the balanced and RCA inputs.

A laptop or phone needs a DAC or another device with an analogue output between it and the amplifier. A turntable needs a built-in or separate phono preamp. The Mini 500 itself does not provide those functions.

What The Power Figures Actually Mean

Topping advertises 250 watts per channel into 4 ohms in stereo and up to 500 watts into 2 ohms in mono. Both headline figures use a distortion-plus-noise limit of 10%, so they need that context.

At the lower 1% limit, the manual lists 220 watts per channel into 4 ohms and 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms. In mono, it specifies 450 watts into 2 ohms or 240 watts into 4 ohms. These are manufacturer measurements, rather than results from our own testing.

One Mini 500 can power a normal left-and-right speaker pair in stereo mode. Mono mode makes it a single-channel amplifier, so a stereo system using that setting needs two units. For a first system, ordinary stereo operation is the straightforward place to start.

Volume Control And System Matching

In VOL mode, the front knob controls volume. BYPASS fixes the amplifier at maximum gain, so it must be used with a source or preamplifier that provides volume control. Check that setting before playing music.

The rear speaker terminals accept banana plugs, bare wire or spade connectors. A 12V trigger input lets compatible upstream equipment switch the amplifier on and off. The supplied power adapter is included, with plug options for several regions.

Price And Availability

The Mini 500 is available from the official Topping store for $229. Confirm the final regional price and plug choice when ordering.

What The Terms Mean

Passive Speakers: Speakers that need a separate amplifier to power them.

Class D: An efficient amplifier design that uses rapidly switching output circuitry. It does not mean the amplifier accepts digital music directly.

Balanced Connection: A connection that sends the signal in two opposite-polarity versions so compatible equipment can reject noise picked up along the cable.

Ohms: The unit used for speaker impedance, which affects the electrical load an amplifier has to drive.

THD+N: Total harmonic distortion plus noise, a measurement of unwanted signal content. Power ratings should state the limit used.

Mono: One audio channel. Stereo uses separate left and right channels.

DAC: A digital-to-analogue converter that turns digital audio into a signal an analogue amplifier can use.
