VIRTUAL HIFI SUPERNOVA OPEN-BAFFLE LOUDSPEAKER LAUNCHES WITH DUAL 15-INCH WOOFERS
Polish HiFi brand Virtual HiFi has launched the Virtual HiFi Supernova, a three-way fully passive open-baffle loudspeaker designed by Grzegorz Rulka, the man behind Cube Audio and Qualio.
Supernova follows Virtual HiFi’s earlier loudspeaker projects, including the Viper, which HiFi PiG previously covered here.
VIRTUAL HIFI SUPERNOVA LOUDSPEAKERS
The Virtual HiFi Supernova uses a dipole open-baffle design with two 15-inch SB Audience woofers, a 7.5-inch SB Acoustics Satori TeXtreme midrange and a large, special-order Mundorf AMT high-frequency driver.
The combination is intended to provide the scale associated with a large loudspeaker while retaining the characteristics of an open-baffle design. The loudspeaker cabinet structure uses constrained-layer construction comprising 3mm steel, 2mm elastomer and a second 3mm steel layer.
A passive crossover is used, with components from Mundorf, Jantzen, Duelund and Clarity Cap. The Supernova is entirely passive and does not require active amplification or electronics within the loudspeaker.
VIRTUAL HIFI SUPERNOVA DESIGN APPROACH
According to designer Grzegorz Rulka, the Supernova began as a personal speaker project aimed at achieving a combination of scale, colour, density and physical presence while retaining speed, openness, spatial presentation and resolution. The open-baffle configuration is central to the design, with the speaker intended to combine the physical scale of its large drivers with the spatial characteristics associated with a dipole loudspeaker.
SPECIFICATIONS
Virtual HiFi specifies a frequency response of approximately 25Hz–22kHz, with 90dB sensitivity and a 4Ω nominal impedance.
VIRTUAL HIFI SUPERNOVA PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
The Virtual HiFi Supernova is priced at €20,000 per pair including VAT, with worldwide delivery included. The loudspeakers are built to order in Poland.
HiFi PiG says: We are very excited about hearing the new Virtual HiFi Supernova loudspeakers!
