CHORD COMPANY TAKES ITS CABLE KNOW-HOW ON THE ROAD
Touring musicians find out more about the Chord Company Cobra Instrument Cables at Chord Co HQ near Stonehenge.
Chord Company has opened its Wiltshire factory to touring musicians, highlighting a side of its business that has been developing for more than two decades. Bands Blue Nation and MeMe Detroit recently spent a day at the company’s factory near Stonehenge, building their own instrument cables and rewiring their guitar pedalboards alongside Chord Company technicians.
CHORD COMPANY COBRA INSTRUMENT CABLES BRING HIFI ENGINEERING TO INSTRUMENTS
Chord Company has been hand-building instrument cables in the UK for more than 20 years, alongside its established HiFi and AV ranges. The company says the move was partly driven by its team of active musicians, who identified a difference between readily available instrument cables and the cable engineering they were accustomed to working with in the audio sector.
The Chord Company Cobra instrument and patch cable range uses silver-plated copper conductors, low-loss FEP insulation and dual-layer foil-and-braid shielding in a twisted-pair configuration. The cables are also designed for touring use, with bespoke patch cable plugs intended for tightly packed pedalboards.
CHORD COMPANY POWER CABLES FIND A PLACE ON STAGE
The company’s work with musicians also extends beyond instrument leads. Chord Company says its HiFi power cables, incorporating shielding, high-grade conductors and its ARAY technology, are being used to supply guitar amplifiers in studio and touring environments.
During their factory visit, members of both bands cut, soldered and tested their own cables before working with the technicians to rewire their pedalboards. The visit provided the musicians with a closer look at how their cables are made and the practical considerations involved in preparing equipment for regular stage use.
CHORD COMPANY COBRA AND ITS GROWING MUSICIAN CONNECTIONS
Blue Nation and MeMe Detroit join a group of musicians already working with Chord Company, including jazz guitarist, composer and arranger Rob Luft and singer-songwriter Reema. The company says feedback from working musicians across different genres forms part of its development process, with touring durability and signal performance among the considerations.
The project represents a broader application of Chord Company’s cable engineering beyond domestic audio systems. Rather than being limited to home HiFi, the company’s instrument cables are being used by musicians in studios and on the road, with the factory visit providing a practical demonstration of how the cables and pedalboard wiring are produced.
