Here’s something I don’t think GadgetyNews has reviewed before – DECT speakers. The ONEmicro speakers have certainly ignored the more oft trodden paths of Bluetooth and WiFi as viable options for wireless transmission – but how do they sound?

The ONEmicro speakers use Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT). If that sounds familiar, then look at your landline phone – DECT is the standard used for cordless phones; and traffic lights for that matter.

Netgear Nighthawk X8 review

If you like your router to look mean, have blue LEDs and rock a cool name, surely the Netgear Nighthawk X8 R8500 should be on your list?

The Netgear R8500 X8 looked a beast when I first met it back in February. Back then the AC5300 standard router had a curiously wavy top. It now seems that the designers have since flattened it though.

Thankfully, the more important stuff has remained just as impressive on the spec sheet – as well as the looks department. The most striking part of the Netgear Nighthawk X8 has to be those antennae that light up blue. But how does the rest of it stack up?

Anki Cozmo is a truly adorable robot

Anki, the makers of the best robotic car game, Overdrive, have taken their robotics skills to the next level with Cozmo.

Remember when Tommy said that there was more interesting developments to come? Well, it seems that he meant sooner rather than later.

Cozmo the robot is the latest creation from Anki, a Silicon Valley toymaker best known for building small race cars you can control using a mobile app. The company was founded in 2010 by a trio of Carnegie Mellon graduates with PhDs in robotics.

Anki have put the robotic knowledge that they’ve honed with Overdrive and squeezed it all in to a cute little dozer-bot called Cozmo.

Cozmo looks just as adorable as the Pixar animated WALL-E, with the main difference being that you can actually own Cozmo.

Up until now, all the headphones GadgetyNews has had to review are from a purely musical point-of-view. As gamers have equally specific requirements we have the Astro A40 TR headset and amp bundle to test.

After my review of the Dali Rubicon 5 floorstanding loudspeakers I was asked if Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries had anything smaller and a little more kind to the bank account. So, I asked if I could take the Dali Menuets for a spin.

I really enjoyed my time with the Rubicons – they suited my room, not only in how they looked but also with how they sounded.

Can the compact Menuet speakers wow me in the same way?

Samsung launching folding phone next year

Now, here’s a test. Who here can remember the Samsung Foldiplay from 2013? Well, It’s folding smartphone rumour time again!

Granted, this fold-up tech could well be the biggest mobile technology breakthrough since the invention of the touchscreen but we have already seen Samsung and LG come up with concepts only to be thwarted when it comes to the flexibility of other smartphone components, as well as the durability of the stretchy ensemble.

OPPO may have recently joined the ranks of Android device manufacturers cooking up bendy handhelds but I reckon it’s a safer bet that Samsung’s Youm concept, now codenamed Project Valley, will hit the shelves first.

LG’s phone has bolt-on bits, Huawei has loaded theirs with 3 camera sensors so where else is there to go? How about night vision? That’s the route taken by the Lumigon T3.

GadgetyNews has been keeping an eye on Lumigon through their goods. The T1 had remote control skills, and the T2 had B&O audio. Now the Scandinavian design house has given its newly revealed T3 night vision.

Before you start thinking that this might just be clever software or filter, the T3 has an actual, honest to goodness night vision camera sensor. This thing can really see in the dark.

BenQ certainly have a monitor for everyone. Here at GadgetyNews we’ve reviewed a few high to mid spec screens but it is now time to check out something more entry level so we give you the GW2270H.

It is easy to get excited about the latest gaming panel or 4K display but not everyone needs, or wants that kind of monitor.

For instance, my needs are going to be different to someone who just nips online to update FaceSpace and Twitagram inbetween filing tax returns or making pie charts.

What we have here in the BenQ GW2270H, hopefully, is a no fuss but decent monitor.

Tascam TrackPack US-2×2 review

Home studios have always been popular but it’s only really over the past 10-15 years that they have actually been in the reach of most people. I remember getting my first tape 4 track recorder but, since the cost of a digital set-up such as the Tascam TrackPack US-2×2, has become affordable and the knowledge required to record something has also been simplified, now is a great time to get tooled up.

First I must apologise for the delay in posting this review. This has not been the fault of the tools sent to me to review but rather my insistence of having something half decent recorded through the set up. Unfortunately, the more pressure I put on myself to record something better than half-baked the more unhappy with what I was producing I became. Then, after a sit down with my friends Jim Beam and Jack Daniels, something hit me. That thing was the epiphany that I was supposed to be reviewing the hardware – not my musical ability and not even the supplied DAW software.

Throwing those shackles aside – it’s time to move on.

Huawei MediaPad M2 10.0 review

The Huawei MediaPad M2 10.0 is set up to be the Chinese company’s challenger to Apple and Samsung. Huawei have made no secret that they aim to actually overtake those two over the next couple of years. Has the MediaPad M2 got the chops though?

Months without a new Huawei device to review and then there’s two in a matter of weeks – not that I am complaining, of course!

Following on from my P9 review, I have just spent the last 10 days living with the premium version of the MediaPad M2 10.0. This is a landscape-focused, 10-inch Android tablet that’s both thin and light and has a classy aluminium build.

This, on paper at least, makes it a direct challenger to Apple’s iPad Air 2. It certainly looks and feels more polished than the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2.

Huawei P9 smartphone review

The Huawei P9 was launched almost three weeks ago and GadgetyNews was there. Since then, I have been living with the phone that packs Leica camera smarts and no fewer than three snapper sensors – one up front and two around back.

Huawei is still trying to win over the Samsung and Apple returning customers. It’s not like they’re unheard of either. Google for one used Huawei to design and build their Nexus 6P, which is an amazing mobile.

With all the chat about the P9’s photographic credentials, has Huawei got it all wrapped up with their latest flagship phone?

You might recall my news of AOC announcing their new line of premium gaming monitors – the AGON series. Now they have released its first model – the 27-inch (68.6 cm) AG271QX.

The AOC AGON AG271QX is powered by a high-speed TN panel at a native resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels.

It promises ultra-smooth images with a 144 Hz refresh rate and a response time of 1 ms, supported by Adaptive-Sync Technology (FreeSync compatible, at a 30-144 Hz range) that reduces stuttering and tearing – focusing on the best gaming performance.

Onkyo DP-X1 claims to be world’s best

The DP-X1 press release makes no bones about it – “Onkyo has launched the world’s best Hi-Res Digital Audio Player, the DP-X1”

That’s a lofty claim to say the least but Onkyo must be pretty sure of themselves.

As you would expect, it handles all the existing Hi-Res formats you can think of, including MQA.

With the rapid rise in consumers wanting “higher than CD quality” High Resolution Audio (High Res Audio) formats, the availability of multiple streaming audio and video services, and High Res-capable headphones, many users have been looking for ways to enjoy their High Res Audio content everywhere they go.

Nvidia JXD S192 portable Android gaming console

I love my Nvidia Shield tablet but what about an Android device that’s dedicated to Android gaming? Well the Nvidia JXD S192 may be the one.

Before I start, I realise that there’ll be some of you saying “Hang on, you’ve forgotten about Ouya!” well, I think most other people have too. The Ouya seemed to be a decent proposition and enough people agreed with the millions it made on Kickstarter originally. Unfortunately, it was buggy as hell and sales were poor. Its lack of support by games developers didn’t help either.

Nvidia’s Shield tablet and Shield Android TV box are both excellent devices that excel when it comes to playing quality games as well as be fully-featured entertainment kit.

Anybody who has played with the latest Shield Tablet K1 will tell you how the Tegra K1 processor makes quality gaming possible on a portable device. My first gen Shield is pretty near darned perfect as it is except that to fully enjoy the gaming experience I need to lug around a wireless controller.

Now a handheld gaming tablet plans to exploit the chip for a gaming handheld that will also come packed with retro emulators aplenty.

iFit Classic smartwatch review

The iFit Classic combines a fitness tracker with the luxurious and timeless looks of an analogue watch.

The iFit Classic is not going to go toe-to-toe with the Tag Connected but I have had a number of positive comments about how it looks. Even better is the astonished faces of those that I then tell that it is tracking my steps and calorie intake.

I think that we’ve all become used to how smartwatches and fitness trackers tend to look, that’s one of the main reasons I was so happy to be given the chance to review the iFit Classic.

Hesh 2 from Skullcandy are over-ear style headphones and, because no one likes getting tangled up in cables, Skullcandy have unleashed a wireless set, which I happen to have here to review.

The Skullcandy Hesh 2 Bluetooth headphones are what I would describe as being full-sized cans.

You have the option of running these fully wireless or wired – but are these mid-range priced headphones anything to get excited about?

The new Griffin Survivor power bank has been designed to cope with the most challenging environments and, as anyone that has endured a weekend festival in the UK can attest, none come more challenging.

I have certainly done my time in tents at festivals – starting off at Monsters of Rock in the 80s and early 90s, numerous Glastonburys, all the UK Sonispheres, a couple of OzzFests, and a Lattitude.

Festivals these days tend to offer recharging lockers which is all well and good if you can do without your device whilst it’s incarcerated. But what happens if you get split up from your party? Manfrotto Lumimuse review

Manfrotto Lumie is a range of new compact, inexpensive, high performance photography lights. They sit below the high-end Manfrotto Spectra range of LED light panels but, as with most Manfrotto kit, would happily suit the prosumer or enthusiast level of photog.

My first experience with a light panel came by way of a suggestion from a professional photographer friend when I asked about how to get better results from shooting at shows, especially A/V expos. He suggested an extremely budget panel that did the trick but is also quite large and cumbersome.

There are three sizes of the Lumie light available: the smallest is the Lumie Play, which I have here, that features three LEDs. The medium-sized Lumie Art has six, and the largest, the Lumie Muse, has eight. As you’d expect, the bigger the unit the more light power it’s capable of outputting.

Manfrotto have recently rebranded this line which is now called Lumimuse.

Chinese manufacturer Cubot Mobile has been working on expanding their empire and, to this end, they have been making their devices available around the world via their website plus other distributors such as the ubiquitous Amazon.

The X17 is very much a mid-range smartphone with an eclectic mix of features and specification all offered for a low end price tag.
