Japanese HiFi brand Esoteric has announced the Esoteric N-01XE network player/DAC, the latest model in its 01 Series.

The Esoteric N-01XE incorporates two technologies derived from the company’s flagship Grandioso N1: the second-generation Master Sound Discrete DAC G2 and the fourth-generation Esoteric Network Engine G4.

ESOTERIC N-01XE USES DUAL-MONO DAC DESIGN

The N-01XE’s DAC section uses a dual-mono configuration, with separate power transformers for the left and right channels. In total, the unit incorporates five independent power transformers serving the left and right DACs, network engine, digital circuits and microcontroller. According to the supplied information, the design uses separate linear power supplies for these sections.

At the heart of the N-01XE is Esoteric’s FPGA-based Master Sound Discrete DAC G2. Rather than using a conventional DAC chipset, the converter is based on a multi-level delta-sigma design using discrete components. The DAC supports signals up to DSD 22.5MHz and PCM 768kHz, with separately developed FPGA processing algorithms for DSD and PCM. The design includes 32 elements per channel, ultra-high-precision MELF resistors and Esoteric’s IDM-01 amplification elements.

G2 ARCHITECTURE BRINGS UPDATED CIRCUIT DESIGN

The second-generation G2 architecture includes a redesigned high-power, low-noise resistor-switching flip-flop circuit. Additional capacitors are positioned close to the resistor elements, while the power supply arrangement separates the FPGA and other digital circuits, as well as the hot and cold analogue supply lines. Each section has its own power regulator.

ESOTERIC N-01XE NETWORK ENGINE G4

The N-01XE is fitted with the fourth-generation Esoteric Network Engine G4, which includes large-capacity RAM, a CPU and an SFP connection for optical networking. The network engine has its own linear power supply, independent of the audio power supply, with separate transformer windings used for individual sections. The G4 also incorporates a built-in network switch function and provides both RJ45 Ethernet and SFP network interfaces.

OPTICAL AND CONVENTIONAL NETWORK CONNECTIONS

The SFP port can be used with an SFP module and fibre-optic cable for connection to an external network switch, while a Direct Attach Cable can also be used. Both the RJ45 and SFP connections can operate simultaneously. The N-01XE also supports native DSD 22.5MHz playback and offers a music server function via USB storage.

ESOTERIC N-01XE CONNECTIVITY AND STREAMING

Digital inputs include ES-Link5, USB, XLR, coaxial and optical connections, alongside the SFP and RJ45 network connections and a USB Type-A input for storage. Analogue outputs are provided on XLR/ES-Link Analog and RCA. There is also a BNC input for 10MHz clock synchronisation, compatible with Esoteric’s G-01XD and G-05 master clocks.

Supported file formats include DSF, DSDIFF, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, MQA, MP3 and AAC. Streaming support includes Tidal, Tidal Connect, Qobuz, Qobuz Connect, Roon, Spotify and QQ Music, with operation via the Esoteric Sound Stream app on smartphones and tablets.

ADDITIONAL ESOTERIC N-01XE DESIGN FEATURES

Other features include Esoteric’s proprietary ES-Link Analog current-transmission connection and ES-Link5 HDMI-based connection for compatible Esoteric SACD transports. The player also incorporates a Master Sound Discrete Clock, a multi-layer chassis, semi-floating top panel and isolation feet. The N-01XE measures 445 × 161.5 × 437mm, weighs 27.8kg and has a stated power consumption of 25W, falling to 0.3W in standby.

ESOTERIC N-01XE PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

The Esoteric N-01XE will be available for international shipment from the beginning of November 2026. International MSRPs are US$28,000, €26,500 in Europe and £22,999 in the UK.

HiFi PiG says: The N-01XE sees Esoteric bringing key digital and network technologies from its Grandioso N1 flagship into the 01 Series, with a particularly substantial focus on the DAC, network engine and independent power supply design.
