PRO-JECT AUDIO SYSTEMS HEAD BOX DS3 B AND HEAD BOX S3 B BALANCED HEADPHONE AMPLIFIERS LAUNCHED
Pro-Ject Audio Systems has introduced two new balanced headphone amplifiers, the Pro-Ject Audio Systems Head Box DS3 B and Pro-Ject Audio Systems Head Box S3 B, marking the start of a refreshed generation of its long-running electronics range.
Designed for home and desktop listening, both models aim to make fully balanced headphone amplification more accessible to a wider audience.
FULLY BALANCED DESIGN IN PRO-JECT AUDIO SYSTEMS HEAD BOX DS3 B AND HEAD BOX S3 B
Both amplifiers use a fully balanced signal path throughout, rather than simply offering balanced connectors. Pro-Ject says this approach helps reduce noise and improve left-right channel separation when used with compatible headphones. Line-level inputs are provided via RCA and XLR, while headphone connections include balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn and 4-pin XLR outputs, alongside standard 3.5mm and 6.3mm single-ended sockets. Single-ended headphones remain fully supported, while balanced headphones require appropriate cabling to take full advantage of the design.

The Pro-Ject Audio Systems Head Box S3 B is built around a fully balanced topology using integrated amplifier stages, delivering up to 820mW of balanced output power. It is intended to drive a wide range of modern headphones while maintaining a compact size and moderate power output focused on real-world use.
PRO-JECT AUDIO SYSTEMS HEAD BOX DS3 B
The Pro-Ject Audio Systems Head Box DS3 B takes a different route with a fully discrete amplifier design. It provides up to 1.5W of balanced output power, offering additional headroom for harder-to-drive or low-sensitivity headphones, while retaining the same connectivity options as the S3 B.
BUILD QUALITY AND SYSTEM INTEGRATION
Both models are housed in full aluminium enclosures designed to provide mechanical stability and electrical shielding. Aluminium controls and buttons are used throughout, and each amplifier includes an RCA loop output for easy integration into a wider HiFi system. The amplifiers are available in black or silver finishes and are manufactured in Europe.
