Volumio Primo Plus Streaming DAC
VOLUMIO PRIMO PLUS STREAMING DAC LAUNCHED
Volumio has announced the launch of the Volumio Primo Plus, a newly developed Streaming DAC designed to deliver high-quality digital playback.
The model builds on the original Primo but is described as a complete redesign following two years of research into streamer and DAC development.
VOLUMIO PRIMO PLUS STREAMING DAC
Italian HiFi brand Volumio states that the Volumio Primo Plus is based on an entirely new architecture, rather than an incremental update. The aim was to improve performance and flexibility across all signal-handling stages, from conversion through to output and system integration.
UPGRADED DAC ARCHITECTURE IN THE VOLUMIO PRIMO PLUS
Central to the new model is a Dual-Mono DAC configuration using two ESS ES9039Q2M chips. This arrangement is engineered to reduce crosstalk while offering high-resolution playback up to PCM 768kHz/32-bit and DSD512.
POWER SUPPLY AND ANALOGUE STAGE ENHANCEMENTS
The Volumio Primo Plus employs upgraded OPAMPs, low-noise line regulators and LC filtering. The analogue and digital sections use dedicated linear power stages to minimise interference and maintain low distortion.
CLOCKING AND JITTER CONTROL IN THE VOLUMIO PRIMO PLUS
A newly developed high-precision clock with ultra-low phase noise is incorporated to reduce jitter. Volumio states this is intended to support stable and accurate digital signal handling across all formats.
CONNECTIVITY AND INPUT OPTIONS
The Primo Plus includes multiple digital input paths: Network, USB-C, USB-A, coaxial and optical, with support for resolutions up to PCM 768kHz/32-bit depending on the input. Bluetooth 5.0 reception is included via the network interface.
OUTPUT OPTIONS AND BALANCED DESIGN OF THE VOLUMIO PRIMO PLUS
A fully balanced output stage is featured, providing XLR and RCA connections. Output voltage levels are selectable, offering eight options each for balanced and unbalanced operation to match a wide range of amplification setups.
USER INTERFACE AND CONTROL FEATURES
The unit features a 1.3-inch OLED display, dual rotary encoders with push-buttons, and a supplied aluminium IR remote. Video output is available via HDMI for external display use, including 4K/60fps mirroring of the Volumio OS interface.
MULTIROOM AND SOFTWARE SUPPORT
VolumioOS powers the Primo Plus, providing multiroom functionality and compatibility with major streaming services, including Tidal/Tidal Connect, Qobuz/Qobuz Connect, Spotify/Spotify Connect and HighResAudio. The device is also Roon Ready and supports AirPlay, DLNA/UPnP, Audirvāna and TuneIn.
NETWORK AND INTERNAL HARDWARE
Internal hardware includes a 64-bit Cortex-A72 SoC running at 1.5GHz. Network connectivity covers Gigabit LAN and dual-band Wi-Fi. Additional connections include USB-C, two USB-A ports, coaxial and optical digital inputs, XLR and RCA analogue outputs, and 12V trigger out.
Like other products from the brand, the Primo Plus is hand-built in Florence. Volumio notes that the name reflects the company’s origins: “Primo” refers to its first-ever product, while “Plus” is intended to mark the extended capability of the new model.
