TECHNICS INTRODUCES SL-40CBT AND SL-50C DIRECT DRIVE TURNTABLES AT CEDIA 2025
Technics has unveiled two new direct drive turntables, the Technics SL-40CBT and Technics SL-50C, at the CEDIA 2025 convention in Denver.
These additions to the range reflect Technics’ long history of turntable development while introducing updated styling and features aimed at both dedicated HiFi users and those discovering vinyl for the first time.
DESIGN AND BUILD OF TECHNICS SL-40CBT AND SL-50C
Departing from the brand’s more traditional aluminium die-cast chassis, the new turntables feature an MDF wood plinth with a minimalist design. This construction is available in three finishes: bold Terracotta, refined Light Grey, or classic Charcoal Black. The compact footprint is intended to integrate into modern interiors with ease and also complements Technics’ SC-CX700 Wireless HiFi Speaker System, which is available in matching colours for those wishing to create a coordinated setup.

CORE TECHNOLOGY IN TECHNICS SL-40CBT AND SL-50C
Both the Technics SL-40CBT and Technics SL-50C are built around the company’s iron-coreless direct drive motor, a design that eliminates cogging and provides stable rotation. Precision control circuitry further enhances speed accuracy. A die-cast aluminium platter with reinforcing ribs, directly coupled to the motor magnet, is used to maintain torque consistency.
A newly designed S-shaped aluminium tonearm is fitted, ensuring accurate tracking across the record surface, while optimised insulator feet provide stability and effective vibration resistance, allowing flexible placement within the home without compromising performance.
TECHNICS SL-40CBT TURNTABLE
The Technics SL-40CBT comes supplied with an Audio-Technica AT-VM95C cartridge, mounted at the factory for straightforward installation. This cartridge employs a conical stylus, offering reliable playback and compatibility with a wide range of records.
In addition, the SL-40CBT features a built-in phono MM equaliser, allowing connection directly to amplifiers or systems without a dedicated phono input. Wireless capability is also included, with Bluetooth output enabling connection to compatible speakers, headphones, and devices. Playback speed support is provided for both 33 and 45 RPM records.

TECHNICS SL-50C TURNTABLE
The Technics SL-50C offers a slightly different approach, with a factory-fitted Ortofon 2M Red cartridge in place of the Audio-Technica model. The 2M Red is equipped with an elliptical stylus and is widely recognised for its open and dynamic presentation, with a touch of warmth in character.
Unlike the SL-40CBT, the SL-50C does not include Bluetooth connectivity, focusing instead on wired performance. However, it does extend playback capability to 78 RPM in addition to 33 and 45 RPM, making it suitable for those with a more varied record collection.
CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS AND USER FLEXIBILITY
Between them, the Technics SL-40CBT and Technics SL-50C offer a choice of modern and traditional connectivity. The SL-40CBT provides wireless flexibility for use with portable and home systems, while the SL-50C caters to listeners preferring a conventional wired setup. Both turntables integrate easily into existing HiFi systems and are aimed at those seeking straightforward operation without compromising on build quality.
Technics has also addressed sustainability with these models. Packaging for both the SL-40CBT and SL-50C reduces the use of plastics, replacing polystyrene foam with cardboard-based materials. This approach minimises environmental impact while ensuring safe transport.
POSITIONING WITHIN THE TECHNICS LINE-UP
These new turntables are positioned as accessible entry points within the Technics range, offering the company’s core direct drive motor technology at a more affordable price level. They are designed to appeal to newcomers to vinyl, as well as to those looking to move beyond entry-level setups, while maintaining Technics’ established engineering standards.
TECHNICS SL-40CBT AND TECHNICS SL-50C AVAILABILITY AND PRICE
The Technics SL-40CBT and Technics SL-50C will be available in the US from September 2025. Both models are priced at $899. UK and Europe pricing to follow.
