Audiolab launched the 8000A in 1983, thirty five years on they are launching the new 6000A. Outwardly, the 6000A bears strong resemblance to the 8300A with its rotary controls and large, central OLED display. But while the 8300A costs £899, the 6000A’s recommended price tag is just £599. Quad has replaced the original Artera Play source component with a new version called the Artera Play+. Like its predecessor, which launched in 2015, the Play+ is a CD player, DAC and preamplifier combined in a single compact chassis. The Totaldac d1-driver is an analogue driver. It is usually connected to the output of the DAC. Vincent Brient of French brand Totaldac told us more. “It is an answer to the endless question “is it better with or without preamp?”The strength of preamps is there active stage more than their volume control. The recent revival in vinyl and explosion of new turntables has spawned an equal number of new phono stages from the bargain basement models to the highly specialised audiophile units costing thousands.
