The C1100 preamplifier from McIntosh has, say the company, “high level inputs having the lowest noise of any McIntosh preamplifier ever produced”. It utilises a two-chassis design where the control and power sections are completely separate from the audio section. XL_C1100C_and_C1100T_Angle_Left

The C1100 is comprised of the C1100 controller and the C1100 vacuum tube preamplifier. Inside each, the left and right channels are electrically and mechanically isolated from each other to allow true dual mono operation. The two units are connected together via a pair of specially designed umbilical cables that are shielded. While they are two separate units, when connected they act as one and are easy to control and operate from the included remote control or the C1100 controller front panel.L_C1100T_Front_Top

All power control, data ports and external control connections are located in the C1100 controller; the introduction of a dual microprocessor allows for an improved robustness of the control system. The C1100 vacuum tube preamplifier houses the audio connections and circuitry, featuring a total of 12 analogue inputs: 6 balanced, 4 unbalanced, plus an adjustable loading Moving Magnet and a Moving Coil phono input.

For outputs, 2 sets of balanced and 2 sets of unbalanced connections provide flexibility in connecting to your amplifier. Twelve vacuum tubes (6 each of 12AX7a and 12AT7) power the tube preamplifier. Compared to the C1000 preamplifier which had 8 tubes, the additional 4 tubes in the C1100 lowers its dependency on any solid-state support. The amplifier circuit has much higher common mode rejection, so any noise introduced by interconnect cables is significantly reduced. For personal listening, the headphone jack features a higher output than any of their other preamplifiers and uses Headphone Crossfeed Director (HXD®).The Home Theatre Pass Through feature allows for integration into your existing multi-channel home theatre system. XL_C1100C_Front_Top

The C1100 preamplifier employs fully balanced circuitry and has the classic McIntosh black glass front panels, blue meters, knobs, stainless steel chassis, illuminated logos and custom machined brushed aluminium end caps.

As part of the Clarity Alliance, GIK Acoustics-Europe will exhibit at The National Audio Show held at Whittlebury Hall in GIK Acoustics Evolution PolyFusor Red w black topNorthamptonshire from Saturday 19th to Sunday 20th September 2015.

They will have several products on display including otheir new Evolution PolyFusor. Introduced in July, the GIK Acoustics is a curved panel that Evolution PolyFusor smoothly transitions from a low-frequency bass trap to a mid- to upper-frequency diffusor.

The Evolution PolyFusor is a combination of a polycylindrical diffusor and an absorber merged into a single unit. Polycylindrical diffusors, or polyfusors, are known for their excellent dispersion characteristics over a very wide range. The curved front plate allows for virtually perfect spatial diffusion, while letting lower frequency waves pass through to the cavity of absorption behind.

GIK Acoustics-Europe General Manager David Shevyn says, “The Evolution PolyFusor is a great way to retain life in a space without creating unwanted glaring, smearing or other mix position horrors. And we’re excited to bring this new product to The National Audio Show.”

In addition to displaying products and chatting with customers, GIK Acoustics is giving each attendee the opportunity to sign up for a 10% discount on their next purchase.

Kennerton, the luxury brand of Fischer Audio, was founded by professionals with a single purpose: “to provide its customers with high-end quality sound”. Fischer Audio have been watching the evolution of the audio industry for a long time and noticed the decreasing amount of products that offer quality sound particularly the large number of fancy looking, low quality models made by famous brands. Fischer Audio is not willing to accept this.NuNu_Kennerton_news2

As they say: “Our policy is that you pay for nothing more than the quality of sound”, believing there’s the pinnacle of sound offered in an integrated line of audio products. Fischer Audio engineers are making every effort to reveal the potential of each model and optimise every detail to find the best balance between price and quality, high quality sound at an affordable price is the fundamental principle of the company.NuNu_Kennerton_news1

The brand consists of headphones, cables and headphone amplifiers which are designed by audiophiles for audiophiles and will be distributed in the UK exclusively by NuNu Distribution.

Audiolab has redesigned its most famous component to deliver an entirely new level of performance. The 8300A is the latest in a long line of Audiolab integrated amplifiers that began in 1983 with the 8000A which Audiolab claim is ‘one of the most influential British audio products of all time.’ The original 8000A was the quintessential ‘step-up’ amplifier, delivering build quality, reliability, functionality and performance that were a clear level above the classic ‘budget’ amps of the time. It proved a tremendous success, its crisp, clean sound quality offering an upgrade path well trodden by music fans in the UK and beyond throughout its 14-year lifespan. The 8300A is the second component to be announced from Audiolab’s new 8300 Series, hot on the heels of the 8300CD CD player/DAC. While the 8300CD is a careful evolution of its predecessor, the 8300A is a full redesign of the product it replaces, the 8200A. Its external design is clean and simple; still recognisably Audiolab, albeit sporting the updated 8300 Series aesthetic. Inside, the changes are more radical.Audiolab_8300A_news1

According to Jan Ertner, who led the 8300A development project, the new amp represents “a fresh approach to the same challenge: genuinely ‘high-end’ audio amplification in a single box, delivered to the end user at an affordable price”. Its design enables it to adapt to its user’s evolving requirements, offering three distinct operational modes: integrated amplifier, preamplifier or power amplifier, the latter enabling it be partnered with a surround sound processor in a high-performance AV system.

At the amp’s heart is a powerful dual-mono power amp section, delivering 75W per channel into eight ohms, with a maximum current delivery of 15 Amps into difficult loads. This is significantly more powerful than the outgoing 8200A, which was rated at 60W into eight ohms. The output stage of the discrete power amp circuits uses a CFB (Complementary Feedback) topology in combination with conventional emitter follower circuitry. The CFB stage offers superior linearity and ensures excellent thermal stability, as the idle current is kept independent of the temperature of the output transistors. Using an emitter follower in combination with the CFB stage is an efficient way of increasing the current ability of the amplifier without compromising the advantages of the CFB circuit. Having the emitter follower deliver additional current only when needed allows for a simpler current-limiting arrangement, which can be voltage independent. Audiolab calls this ‘Active Current Drive’, where the current limiting is under microprocessor control and programmed to allow the amplifier to supply high currents (+- 15A) into complex loads on par with amplifiers that are bigger and more powerful on paper. A 300VA toroidal transformer supplies the two mono amplifiers using separate secondary windings, followed by 2x15000uF reservoir capacity per channel (60000uF in total). The preamp section is kept as simple as possible to maintain signal purity, with line input signals simply passing through a unity gain buffer and a precision analogue volume stage. The latter covers the range from-80dB to +8dB in steps of 2dB, 1dB and 0.5dB (step resolution increasing with volume position). Much effort has gone into the physical layout of the 8300A’s circuitry, keeping the sensitive preamp section as free from noise interference as possible. This, plus the use of independent power supplies for critical circuit stages, helps to deliver performance on par with high-quality two-box pre/power amp systems. The inclusion of a phono stage is another important enhancement – the 8200A eschewed this facility, but the 8300A brings it back to capitalise on the current vinyl revival. Turntable users will appreciate the care with which this new stage has been designed, fed by its own power supply and delivering a high-quality, low- noise performance with both MM and MC cartridges, thus removing the need for an off-board phono stage.Audiolab_8300A_(internal)_news

Externally, the most obvious addition is an OLED display in the centre of the amp’s fascia, showing volume level, input selection, mode of operation and MM/MC phono setting. This display reflects the design of the 8300CD, helping to ensure that Audiolab’s new 8300 Series integrated amp and CD player/DAC are a perfect match for each other both aesthetically and functionally. Around the back, five line-level RCA inputs nestle alongside the phono input, plus a balanced XLR input for suitably equipment source components (including the 8300CD). Two pre outputs, a power input, a 12V trigger loop and a full set of loudspeaker binding posts for bi-wiring complete a comprehensive array of connectivity options.

The Audiolab 8300A integrated amplifier is available from October in a choice of silver or classic Audiolab black, with an RRP of £899.95.

Linn has launched Exakt support for three more loudspeaker models from other manufacturers. The performance improvements of Exakt are now available for Kef Reference 5, PMC Twenty26 and JBL K2 S9900, in addition to the existing list of supported speakers which includes B&W Nautilus and 802 Diamond, Kudos Super 10, Super 20 and Titan 808. They have also also launched three new Exaktboxes .

Majik Exaktbox-I

Linn’s first Exakt product in the Majik range not only has all the capabilities of an Exaktbox, it also contains power amplification, making this an extremely flexible proposition for those looking for an accessible route to Exakt. Supporting a full Exakt Engine, along with 8 channels of digital-to-analogue conversion and 8 channels of 100W Chakra amplification, the Majik Exaktbox-I is a one-box, first-step upgrade to Exakt. Not only does it have enough channels to target any current or historic Linn speaker up to 4-way, as well as all eight models with Exakt support, it’s also software re-targetable so customers are able to change their speakers whenever they choose and keep their Exakt source.Linn_Majik_Exaktbox_l_news

Akurate Exaktbox

This is the second Akurate Exaktbox, with six digital-to-analogue conversions, for targeting loudspeakers requiring up to 3 channels of amplification. Linn’s existing Akurate Exaktbox with 10 outputs remains the perfect choice for those with 4- or 5-way loudspeakers. However, many of Linn’s historic loudspeakers are 3-way and this Exaktbox offers a dedicated Exakt product for them, as well as customers with 2-way speakers. Like the Klimax Exaktbox, the 6-way Akurate Exaktbox can be run in stereo mode, where a single Exaktbox targets a pair of 3-way speakers, or deliver higher performance in dual mono mode where the entire processing of each Exaktbox is dedicated to a single speaker.

Exaktbox Sub

The Exaktbox Sub has been specifically designed to work with all subwoofers, delivering seamless integration with a customer’s Exakt System and eradicating all of the issues associated with the addition of an analogue subwoofer to any music system. With a small discreet form, the Exaktbox Sub can be placed wherever it suits and even hidden out of sight if desired. It houses two channels of Akurate Exakt crossover and digital-to-analogue conversion, and there are RCA and XLR outputs on the rear which enable flexible configuration options, from separate left and right channels (using two subwoofers) to a mono or stereo connection for a single subwoofer. It can be used to target any subwoofer by simply adjusting the subwoofer gain to blend into the speakers.Linn_Exaktbox_Sub_news

Pricing and availability

All three new Exaktboxes are available now.

Exakt support for Kef Reference 5, PMC Twenty26 and JBL K2 S9900 will be available from November 2015.

The 6-way Akurate Exaktbox is priced at £3,500, the Majik Exaktbox-I is £3,950 and the Exaktbox Sub is £1250.

For almost 40 years, Bowers & Wilkins have produced generation after generation of 800 Series loudspeakers. Now, on the eve of the company’s 50th anniversary, they say that ‘the latest 800 Series Diamond redefines what is possible from a loudspeaker system, it is the result of an intensive seven-year project to make the best better. A combination of tireless research and development, advanced engineering, and countless hours of listening by the very best ears in the business have produced a range of loudspeakers that places the listener closer to the recording than ever thought possible.  The improvement can be heard from the first note.’  The fundamental evolution of the range is such that almost all of the component parts are different from the outgoing 800 Series Diamond.  As Bowers & Wilkins Head of Research Martial Rousseau says, “This is not an update. This is a completely re-imagined design.  One of the few remaining elements is the Diamond tweeter. We found it impossible to improve on the performance offered by diamond, although behind the diamond dome, the motor system was improved considerably.”  The exceptional Diamond dome may have been retained, but the rest of the loudspeaker has been thoroughly over-hauled. The changes involve a vast number of technological, engineering and acoustic innovations. Most striking is the transformation of the midrange drive units. A new Continuum cone, developed in-house by Bowers & Wilkins engineers, replaces the Kevlar cones that have long been a major factor of the 800 Series’ famously realistic midrange performance.  The Continuum cone takes the best acoustic aspects of Kevlar further.   Bass performance has also been dramatically improved by the introduction of the Aerofoil cone, which considerably reduces distortion thanks to a new variable profile cone geometry more advanced sandwich construction. These innovations, when teamed with dramatically improved cabinets, more robust Matrix bracing system, a new solid body tweeter assembly and the vastly improved Turbine head midrange enclosure means distortion has been reduced dramatically.802_Bowersandwilkins_news

The new design is industrial and it is both a radical departure and, paradoxically, a subtle change that preserves Bowers & Wilkins’ unique design aesthetic; a slender, more modern design that remains true to Bowers & Wilkins long tradition. With distinctive aluminium pods on all models securing and decoupling drivers from the enclosure, and the Turbine head constructed from a single piece of aluminium sitting on a sleek reverse-wrap cabinet on the “headed” models, the luminously finished cabinets are crafted from layers of wood, curved into shape under intense pressure.803_Rosenut_curtains

Testament to Bowers & Wilkins desire to manufacture consistently class-leading loudspeakers, the entire manufacturing plant in Worthing, West Sussex, UK was redesigned specifically for production of the new 800 Series Diamond, an enormous investment in tooling, materials and processes to ensure that every model produced is a perfect replica of the reference master. Throughout the range – from the studio-quality 802 D3 to the more accessible 805 D3 – there is something to suit every audiophile preference. Imagined, designed and produced in the UK, Bowers & Wilkins say that the new 800 Series Diamond range is the pinnacle of British acoustic engineering achievement.

Meridian Audio announces that its co-founder, Bob Stuart, is to receive the CEDIA 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award. First awarded by CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) in 1992, previous recipients include some of the electronics industry’s most brilliant entrepreneurs, inventors, engineers, and leaders.Bob Stuart and MQA at Munich 2015

A graduate of Imperial College London, Bob’s passion for music led him to specialise in audio design. Soon after graduation Bob met Allen Boothroyd and the duo’s first collaboration was on the Lecson hi-fi system, a design so innovative that it’s now part of the permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and London’s Victoria & Albert Museum.

Bob and Allen founded Meridian Audio in 1977 and that same year heralded the arrival of the M1, the Cambridgeshire-based company’s first product. An active loudspeaker system – unknown in consumer electronics at the time – the M1 provided the foundation for much that has come later.

Meridian is now an international brand sold by a network of international dealers and distributors. A winner of over 300 industry awards and accolades Meridian has also been successful in the automotive sector enjoying a relationship with McLaren and Jaguar Land Rover for whom it is the sole audio brand partner. Bob also developed Meridian Lossless Packing, the technology at the heart of DVD-Audio, and part of the Blu-Ray Disc specification.

Over 40 years on from the award-winning and somewhat iconic Lecson, Bob refuses to slow down, and continues to innovate. His latest music technology, MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) embraces the digital worlds of downloads and streaming, aiming to change the way we all hear music. Going back to the original master recording, MQA captures the full, intricate detail of a live performance, and the technology has already received support from the music industry, artists, recording and mastering engineers and record labels.

Bob Stuart will receive his Lifetime Achievement Award at CEDIA EXPO 2015, to be held in Dallas, Texas October 14-17. Please join us in congratulating Bob on this terrific honour.

Everything vibrates, period. For the audiophile, this is a serious challenge, since vibration affects the delicate audio signals in virtually every hi-fi component and I for one am forever experimenting with vibration control. Vibrations move through the floor, the furniture and the air to enter audio equipment via the feet and chassis. And of course the equipment itself generates further vibrations.

These ‘unwanted’ resonances raise the noise floor in turntables. They interfere with the vibration-sensitive crystal oscillators in computers, DACs and streamers. In disc players, they cause the error-correcting circuitry to work overtime while in both valve and transistor amplifiers, they jangle the microphonic components. All of which serves to degrade the quality of the audio signal at various stages in its journey from source to ear, ultimately constraining the optimum performance of the overall system.BHI Sanctum Platform

Blue Horizon’s new Sanctum isolation platform is specifically designed to isolate individual high-performance components such as turntables, DACs, preamplifiers, power amplifiers, CD players and streamers from all sources of unwanted vibration.

The platform’s construction brings together a selection of carefully chosen materials from opposite ends of the elasticity spectrum, combining them in such a way as to reduce resonance evenly across the audio band, which they say effectively:

  • Lowers distortion across the audio spectrum
  • Improves detail, clarity and tonal neutrality
  • Improves bass definition
  • Delivers wide open and deep soundstages
  • Enables more expressive dynamic contrast and shading to be revealed.

The platform shelf is made from high density fibreboard (HDF), favoured for its mechanical stability. Unlike woods with a fixed grain, HDF does not expand or contract with climatic changes.

The HDF shelf is precision-machined in five places: four recesses, one at each corner, and a circular central hollow designed to eliminate any standing waves within the shelf itself.

Each of the four corner recesses features a complex isolation foot made up of three key elements:

  • A dense compound of cork, rubber and leather, whose ‘chaotic’ construction, which randomly combines materials of varying density and elasticity, is ideal for breaking up resonant frequencies.
  • A ‘visco-elastic’ polymer (meaning that it exhibits properties of both liquids and solids), which combines shock absorption and good memory with very high vibration isolation and damping characteristics over a very wide temperature range.
  • A precision-machined spiked aluminium cone.

Each isolation foot’s complete assembly is held in place by an outer ring which prevents the individual parts from dropping out when the platform is being lifted into position, but which decouples once the Sanctum is in place, leaving the platform freely floating on the isolation feet.

To protect furniture surfaces, the Sanctum comes with four 5mm spike protection feet, which additionally provide further resonance control by introducing an additional material boundary (solid brass, in contrast to the aluminium spikes).

The Sanctum comes in two finish options: matt black or matt white, both scratch-resistant and easy to clean.

The Blue Horizon Sanctum will be available from October 2015 priced at £195 (including VAT).

Available with a matt black or a matt white finish.

KBL Sound from Poland got in touch to tell us all about their new flagship Signature series, Himalaya, which they say is the culmination of their long-term efforts to create such cables allowing the highest standard of audio equipment to reveal their full potential.

“We have used costly and time-consuming solutions, as no other way exists to get exceptional results. Mass production has one undeniable drawback: it can not create the best possible. Making cables by hand has its own specific advantages, which mainly deal with aspects of the mechanical design, related to the damping of vibrations and stresses. With industrial mass production these aspects cannot be treated uncompromisingly. Handcrafting cables in the Himalaya series, where the spatial topology of conductors plays a key role, is quite backbreaking and laborious, but it’s finally possible – as conquering the most difficult mountain peaks. However, we hope that these products will provide for music lovers the opportunity to experience the breathless delight, compared to the thrill on the highest mountain; our special, limited edition bears such a name. We believe that The Signature Series, Himalaya, now joins the world’s premier league” commented  Robert Szczerbowski of KBL Sound.

Today at the IFA show in Berlin, Crystal Acoustics presents in full for the first time its WiSound Multiroom range of products, a series of wireless speakers and complementary devices that offer a uniquely flexible and easy-to-use way of organising a multi-zone music network.Crystal_acoustics_news

The full range includes the Cuby 9 standalone wireless speaker, the Teevy 6 MR soundbase, Teevy Bar soundbar, WiSub subwoofer, the Tower 5 and Tower 6 floorstanding stereo speakers, and the Monitor 1 and Monitor 8 stereo speakers. It also includes the Widaptor, a small Wi-Fi transmitter/receiver that can be attached to any pre-existing audio setup you wish to keep, incorporating your old audio products into your new multi-room music network, all neatly controlled from the smartly designed WiSound app (available now on iOS and Android). In addition, all of the Crystal Acoustics Wireless Multiroom speakers use the company’s unique WiSound technology, a proprietary tech utilising multiple drivers and ingenious processing to employ the acoustic reflections in each room to ensure the speaker delivers exactly the same tonal balance no matter where the listener is in relation to it. This eliminates the ‘sweet spot’, makes music listening intrinsically more social, and makes the performance of the product far less dependent on placement.

Dali have introduced the Zensor Pico and Zensor Pico Vokal, an ultra compact, high quality speaker range with a very small footprint.Dali_Zensor_Pico_news_A

Designed for people living in a smaller space, the Zensor Pico are, essentially, a scaled down Zensor One (about 30% smaller). They use exactly the same 25mm treble driver, married to a 4.5in mid-bass driver, all housed in a tiny bass-reflex cabinet that’s designed for on-wall or near wall mounting (both models have integral keyhole mounting brackets), making them ideal for small/mid-sized rooms.  There are plenty of mix and match options but Dali recommends home cinema fans make a beeline for the Dali Zensor Pico 5.1 System. This comprises two pairs of the Pico speakers, a Pico Vokal, plus the award-winning E-9-F Subwoofer. With a 170 watt power amplifier driving its 9in aluminium bass driver, this downwards ported design (to enable near wall positioning) gives a response down to 35Hz (+/- 3dB).Dali_Zensor_Pico_news_B

Available in Black, White or Light Walnut, enabling you to mix and match the Zensor Pico with other members of the Zensor family.  Available now at £159 for a pair of Dali Zensor Pico, £79 for a Pico Vokal and £779 for the Zensor Pico 5.1 System.

One album, two men, too many instruments! Two crazy barefoot Aussies wield over 20 instruments to faithfully recreate Mike Oldfield’s epic 1973 masterpiece. Following sell-out seasons around the world and a Best Music Award-winning appearance at the 2015 Adelaide Fringe Festival, Tubular Bells for Two returns to tour the UK fresh from its third sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe.TB42 - NEW IMAGE 3 - CREDIT JOANNE KEE

Tubular Bells for Two started as an idea conjured up over a bottle of wine and two guitars by Daniel Holdsworth and Aidan Roberts. After arranging the music of this classic rock album by ear for acoustic guitar, more and more instruments were added to create the current stage set-up of keyboards, guitars, bass, mandolin, glockenspiel, loop pedals and of course tubular bells, forming a mathematical and acrobatic musical rollercoaster.
