Krell have announced today that their S-550i integrated amp will be shipping this week!S550i_Front-sm

The Krell S-550i builds on the success of the S-300i integrated amplifier and delivers 275 watts of stereo output. The S-550i is outfitted with balanced and single-ended inputs, iPod dock, and Theater Throughput™ mode. For custom integration applications, 12 volt triggers, RS-232 connectivity and rack mount ears are included. Operational parameters can be customized via the menu system that is accessible from the front panel or the included brushed Aluminum remote control.

The preamplifier section features circuit concepts from Krell’s flagship Phantom preamplifier. Direct coupled circuitry eliminates capacitors from the signal path and a custom-machined level control adjusts volume. Discrete circuitry, in a balanced topology, is afforded its own power supply regulation. All signal gain is realized using surface mount technology featuring proprietary current mirrors. Negative feedback is not used anywhere in the preamplifier. Open-loop distortion is typically less than 0.003%. The volume control is realized with a balanced resistor ladder – bandwidth and transient response of the preamp circuitry are virtually unaffected by the volume setting.

The S-550i packs 1,750 watt transformer and 68,000μF of capacitance into a 5″ high chassis. This power supply feeds classic Krell circuitry throughout the topology using only discrete circuitry. That is, the S-550i doubles its power output when a speaker’s impedance is halved. For the S-550i, the results are 275 watts into 8 Ohms and 550 watts into 4 ohms.

Hifi Pig received a message from Funjoe the founder of Clones Audio in Hong Kong. Clones Audio is a one-man clonesworkshop producing amplifiers which are inspired by the 47labs gain card, so essentially gain clone products.

The story goes that one day Funjoe’s father came along to listen to his 47labs system, liked it and wanted a set for himself and so Funjoe decided to make him one for his birthday.

Funjoe says ” There are many people making the gain clone, but not many of them really get the soul of it. Many of them try to make the gain clones with audiophile parts, I tried it too but I don’t think it is better. Then I tried to do it in the simple way. After many trial and errors I have my own version of the gain clone. A new PCB layout and tiny case to make the signal path more direct.”

“For sure all of the amplifier will hand made by myself to keep the products in highest performance. I would like to sell at an affordable price so that more people can make a first step on the audio journey this wonderful stuff. Also to have my own production is my dream also.”

There are 4 power amplifiers in the range including two monos and two integrated amplifiers as well as a stereo power amplifier starting at $429.

G Point-Audio has today announced that they have been appointed exclusive representative for Ukrainian artisan  loudspeaker manufacturer Contrast Audio. The announcement broadens the range of products available from G Point and reaffirms their philosophy of “offering the best sound quality money can buy”.

Contrast Audio are a manufacturer with 10 years experience in the design and manufacture of acoustic systems based on their own highly linear drivers. All their loudspeakers are built on the principle of minimum crossover interference (first order filter), which gives “high sensitivity and accurate sound”. The drivers use only natural materials (paper cone, paper coil of magnetic system, wooden phase corrector, etc.).

There are five models in the Contrast Audio, plus a range of interconnects and loudspeaker cables which match those used in the speakers themselves.

The finish of the loudspeakers is said to be exemplary with five piano lacquer colours available as standard and any colour available on request.

California based NuForce have introduced a direct-digital integrated amplifier that they claim marks a new juncture in digital sound. The new design converts the digital audio signal into analogue form at the last possible stage—the PWM amplifier output. “The DDA-100’s  low distortion and noise floor remain in the digital domain from beginning to end, to give a wide dynamic range.”

The DDA-100 doesn’t require a DAC stage, rather, its PWM power amplifier stage is modulated directly by the incoming signal, and the digital-to-analogue conversion takes place at the speaker outputs. In effect, the PWM power amplifier stage operates as a power DAC.

It accepts four digital sources via one USB and with the included remote control, you can control inputs and volume from  your listening chair.

The DDA-100 will drive your loudspeakers via a robust 75-Watt RMS and 250-watt peak capability per channel for “superb dynamics and transparency.”

The NuForce DDA-100 is available worldwide for a suggested retail price of US $549.00 and will be shipping Aug 1, 2012.

Making its world premier at T.H.E Show Newport Beach is the Leto preamplifier from Zesto Audio. Zesto is a US based company headed up by George Counnas who worked for DECCA Navigator in the UK.

Zesto introduced their first product, the Andros PS1 phonostage, back in 2011 and it received a good deal of attention and glowing reviews.

The Leto claims the same “bloodline” as the Andros and promises to be “warm, musical and very quiet”. The basic philosophy of George has been to focus on only the important components of the Leto and to add nothing that could compromise the signal path. To this end the only active components in the Leto preamplifier are the valves themselves (Valves used are 2 gold pin 12AX7 and 2 gold pin 12AU7).

Using true floating transformer balanced inputs and outputs the Leto promises a lower overall noise and isolation from other equipment in the set up. The Leto has 3 sets of single ended inputs and 2 sets of true balanced transformer inputs, 2 sets of balanced outputs and 2 single ended outputs.

The Leto is hand-built in the US and has a retail price of $7500.

NAD Electronics have combined their Direct Digital Amplifier and Modular Design Construction (MDC) concepts, to introduce the C 390DD Direct Digital DAC/Amplifier, which is now available in UK.

Direct Digital Amplification promises a pure digital path, while MDC endows the C 390DD with the same future ready flexibility that has recently distinguished NAD’s leading audio/video components.

The C 390DD boasts a healthy 150 watts per channel and “can power demanding high-end loudspeakers”. The C 390DD has no analogue stages in the signal path, keeping the music in the digital domain right up to the speaker outputs. This is a true digital amplifier or perhaps “a DAC that amplifies” boasting 35-bit architecture and a precision 108 MHz master clock. More »

Harmonic Audio Labs is a Greek manufacturer headed up by Kostantinos Kourkounis with just one product in their range for the moment – the SE-100 Integrated Class A amplifier.

Harmonic Audio Labs SE-100 is a no compromise, single ended amplifier delivering 50 Watts per channel using parallel mosfets.

The pre amplifier section of the SE-100 uses Jfets and the coupling is achieved using interstage trafos.

There are 4 inputs (3 RCA and 1 XLR) and the amp can also run as a power amplifier where the preamplifier section is completely isolated.

Separate PSUs are used in every single stage of the amplifier giving a total of 16 PSUs in the chassis with twelve of them being regulated. The unregulated power supplies are left with only capacitors and chokes as the designers feel this gave the best sonic results.

Hifi Pig will review the SE-100 in the very near future.

Etalon Acoustics is a Hungarian manufacturer headed up by Laszlo Sallay, who make beautifully finished loudspeakers, DACs and amplifiers.

New for 2012 the company has released the Integral. As the name suggest the Etalon Integral is an integrated amplifier which claims a unique design with only 2 stages of amplification in the signal path, which Etalon claim offers reproduction with little or no variation from the original recording.

The Integral is designed for use with high-end sources and all types of loudspeakers.

The amplifier consists of two completely independent mono-blocs, both with their own low noise, dual wound toroidal power supplies.

Interesting the Integral sports no knobs or buttons on its fascia and is completely controlled by the remote. More »

Unison Research has launched its latest integrated amplifier – Simply Italy – to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification as a nation.

This compact, 5 input, line level integrated clearly draws its inspiration from the Simply Two amplifier.

Unison have created a newly redesigned version of the Simply Two that shares many of its characteristics and sonic attributes with the famous original, but with a more modern appearance. Simply Italy offers the same 12 watts per channel, but now features a 6-Ohm output impedance, increasing the amp’s flexibility for use with 4 and 8-Ohm loudspeakers.

Amplifying stages are all strictly valve-based and operate in pure Class-A mode.

The output stage for Simply Italy consists of just one EL34 in single-ended ultra-linear configuration and this mode of operation is made possible by a particular development of the output transformers, which in practice, allow the pentode EL34s to operate almost as if they were triodes. The preamp and driver stage of the power output is entrusted to ECC82 twin triodes.

Unison Research’s design department has created an interestingly designed amplifier that harks back to the original Simply Two, yet incorporates “significant aesthetic improvements”.

The wood parts of the Simply Italy are said to be important for the aesthetic design but also play an important role in damping chassis resonance and “assist the delicate electronic parts, valves etc, to perform at their best.”

The Simply Italy boasts an ALPS motorized pot, infra-red remote handset and gold-plated speaker terminals. It is available in black and stainless steel with cherry detail inserts, or cherry with black inserts.

Cost is a pound short of £1500.
