Pro-Ject Audio Systems has released the Pro-Ject Head Box E, a compact headphone amplifier designed to support a range of headphones, including those with higher impedance.

The Pro-Ject Head Box E Micro-Sized Headphone Amp is part of the Austrian brand’s ongoing range of small-footprint audio components and is distributed in the UK by Henley Audio.

Unlike many amplifiers at this price point that rely on integrated circuits, the Pro-Ject Head Box E uses a fully discrete circuit layout. This approach allows for tighter control of the signal path, potentially improving power handling and serviceability over time. The amplifier operates with a power output of 665 milliwatts into 32 ohms and supports headphones with impedances ranging from 8 to 600 ohms.

CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS ON PRO-JECT HEAD BOX E

The rear panel includes a pair of RCA line-level inputs and a bypass output, enabling users to pass the unaltered signal to another device. This design allows the unit to integrate into existing two-channel systems without interrupting the signal chain. On the front, there are two headphone outputs: a standard 6.3mm jack and a 3.5mm jack. Both can be used at the same time.

BUILD AND DIMENSIONS OF PRO-JECT HEAD BOX E

The Pro-Ject Head Box E is housed in a metal chassis measuring 103 x 37 x 120 mm and weighs 390 grams. It is available with a black body and either a silver or black front panel. The unit’s design is deliberately simple, without additional controls beyond the volume knob.

APPLICATIONS FOR PRO-JECT HEAD BOX E

The amplifier is intended for use with sources such as laptops, phones, or traditional HiFi systems, including CD players and turntables. Its dedicated amplification is positioned as a potential improvement over the headphone outputs commonly found on integrated stereo amplifiers.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OVERVIEW

The Pro-Ject Head Box E has a frequency response of 20Hz to 80kHz (±0.2dB), gain of 11dB, and a signal-to-noise ratio of -105 dBV. Output impedance is listed as under 1 Ohm, with total harmonic distortion and noise (THD+N) specified at under 0.005%. The power supply is 5V DC, and standby consumption is under 0.5W.

PRO-JECT HEAD BOX E MICRO-SIZED HEADPHONE AMP AVAILABILITY AND PRICING

The Pro-Ject Head Box E is available from July 2025, with a UK retail price of £89.00 and a European price of €119 (including VAT).
