Mr SME Tonearm Service And Repair
MR SME TONEARM SERVICE AND REPAIR LAUNCHED BY FORMER SME ENGINEER
After 38 years with British HiFi brand SME Ltd, long-serving engineer Brian Laker has launched an independent company, Mr SME, dedicated to servicing and repairing SME pickup arms.
Laker is well known within the HiFi sector for his long association with SME tonearms and will now provide support to owners directly.
MR SME TONEARM SERVICE AND REPAIR
Laker’s career in electronics began after studying at Worthing College of Technology, followed by work in HiFi and television repair. His connection with SME started early when he purchased his own SME tonearm at 17. After a period in telecommunications, he joined SME in 1987 as an assembly technician and progressed through roles including team leader, Assembly and Service Manager, and later Quality Manager, remaining with the company until November 2025.

During his time at SME, Laker worked across production, servicing and quality control, and also managed the electroplating department. He tells us he contributed to the design and development of several SME turntable models and worked on electronics partnerships for later MK2 designs. He was also a key point of contact for tonearm repairs within the company.
MR SME TONEARM SERVICE AND REPAIR SERVICES
Now operating independently under the Mr SME name, Laker provides service and repair support for SME tonearms worldwide, alongside installation assistance for customers in the south of the UK. His workshop is located in rural Sussex, a few miles from the SME factory, and is equipped with specialist tooling and measurement equipment for tonearm servicing.

Brian tells us that tonearms sent for service are fully stripped and rebuilt, with replacement wiring and bearings fitted and aligned using dedicated jigging and calibration equipment. The stated aim is to return units to original operating condition.
