German supermarket and cut-price retailer Lidl has joined the competitive online streaming marketplace with their new hi-resolution service they are calling Tidl.

Tidl aims to bring high quality music streaming to the mass market by offering super-competitive monthly plans that the company believe will entice music lovers away from the current streaming providers.  TIDL

Tidl is launching today, with a monthly price of just £1.50 for its Premium service, with an intense online, television, radio and press advertising campaign featuring David Hasselhoff of Bay Watch fame being the “face” of the brand. The promotion will rely heavily on the stars hit single “Jump In My Car” and is said to have a few surprises and other guest appearances in store.

Gunther Bauch Lachen, President Of Vice at Tidl told Hifi Pig “ We are exceptionally proud to announce our new premium streaming service and we are convinced that consumers will sign up in their droves, just as they have embraced our sister company’s retail model. We are also especially thrilled to have “The Hoff” at our side to help promote the service.
He continued “We are of a strong opinion that our policy of playing only oompah band music and the wonderful music of David Hasselhoff will prove exceptionally popular with our friends across the globe and that within only a short few months we will become market leaders”

The Intempo Retro Blaster continues the company’s fascination with past decades. Not so long ago I reviewed their 50s-style jukebox and today I take a look at their modern take on a 70s/80s classic – the ghetto blaster.

For those of you too young to remember when portable audio meant a small, mono, transistor radio the arrival of the Walkman and the mighty ghetto blaster was the dawning of a new age. No longer were you at the mercy of radio DJs when you wanted music on the move. Now you could pack a few C90 cassettes (ask your parents) with your favourite tunes on and then annoy anyone within earshot in the park, on the bus, or on the train.

It was with a good deal of trepidation that we embarked on this year’s trip to the Haute Fidélité show in Paris and not without good reason. As I’m sure all readers will be aware the weekend prior to the event Paris had been hit by a terrorist attack that left hundreds of people killed or injured. There was a good deal of discussion at Hifi Pig as to whether we should cancel the visit, but the train and apartment were booked and we were very much of the thought that if we didn’t go then the terrorists had got just what they wanted. I’m writing this preamble on the train and I must confess to feeling a little nervous about the whole venture. However, the people at Haute Fidélité and a number of the exhibitors we know well were determined that the show must go on and so who are we to cry off when we are promised a great line up of kit and a weekend of musical enjoyment.

I don’t want to go into the whole “this sounded great, this sounded crap” scenario with this write up of the show as I think it took a great deal of courage for Haute Fidélité to go ahead with the show and for the exhibitors to turn up. It’s also good to see that a large number of the public turned out for the event.
Yes, there was a little extra security at the front door with everyone getting searched, but this was neither intrusive nor any kind of hassle.  More »

The new line of Sonance DSP amplifiers have been engineered with time saving presets and, say Sonace, deliver ‘amazing sonic performance with high-resolution audio’. They have received CEDIA’s 2015 Best New Product Award.

Sonance_DSP_AMP_news_1

DSP is widely used in home theatres and media rooms to accurately correct for a room’s acoustic characteristics. However, when it comes to distributed audio, DSP is rarely considered. The reason for the lack of room correction in distributed audio is primarily the time, complexity, and equipment required for DSP in every area of the home. Pre-loaded with 40 DSP presets, the DSP amplifiers eliminate the need for manual calibration saving time and effort. Each preset was developed from the acoustic average of 5 rooms of various sizes and furnishings. Presets can be accessed in the DSP amplifiers via the SONARC (Sonance Advanced Room Correction) software pre-installed on every DSP amplifier. The DSP presets cover all Sonance speakers and range from flat to +6dB. Additionally presets account for many variables such as: live rooms, dead rooms, materials, hardscapes, and landscapes. Over 600 engineered presets can be downloaded from the Sonance website and imported into the DSP amplifiers.

Sonance_dsp_amp_news_2

The physical design of the DSP amplifiers has been engineered to the highest of audiophile standards. The powerful, high resolution 24-bit/96Khz DSP and DAC allows the amplifiers to pass through true high resolution content without compression. High resolution audio can pass through to the DSP amplifiers with the optional DIM (Digital Input Module). Additionally, the DSP amplifiers provide high resolution with full safety ratings into 8 ohms and 4 ohms, and are completely stable to 2 ohms. The Sonance DSP amplifiers take up a much smaller footprint that is stackable saving valuable rack space.

After 40 years of creating audio equipment, the last thing that artist-designer Kostas Metaxas wanted to produce was “another box with transistors on a heatsink”. He was apparently inspired by ‘the most spectacular architecture, design and sculpture’ he had experienced and ‘wanted to bring that emotional intensity, daring and seductive beauty to an audio amplifier.’Metaxas_solitaire_1

The Solitaire 2016 is the result. Machined from a solid block of either aircraft aluminium, copper or titanium, it’s totally bespoke and Metawas claims that ‘the modular electronics make it future-proof’. Even the circuit boards are CNC machined from 1mm solid silver coated clear polystyrene.  100% designed and engineered by Kostas Metaxas, each amplifier is assembled by his sons, either Andreas or Alessandros Metaxas.Metaxas_solitaire_2

The Solitaire 2016 along with the Ikarus Integrated Amplifier and Opus preamplifier will be “world premiered” at the Munich High End Hifi Show in May 2016. A Studer A80 will be playing 10″ Analogue Master Tapes from a selection of the over 300 Classical and Jazz concerts recorded by Metaxas on his modified Stellavox Tape equipment. Hifi Pig will be there to report back on how they sound.

Sonus faber has introduced Il Cremonese, the latest creation from the Italian high end loudspeaker manufacturer which will join the Homage Collection in the Sonus faber catalogue. As the newest member of the Homage Collection, Il Cremonese shares many features of both form and function. A three-and-a-half way, floorstanding loudspeaker, Il Cremonese is the result of evolutionary product design, and the adaptation of technologies from the Lilium and other Sonus faber speaker projects. The name Il Cremonese is an homage to Antonio Stradivari, and one of his most famous violins, celebrating its 300th anniversary in 2015. First named after the original owner, and known since the 18th century as Joachim, Stradivari’s violin was renamed “Il Cremonese” in 1961 when it was selected as the first Stradivari to return to the city of Cremona as part of the permanent collection in the Museo del Violino. This is one of the most important instruments in the history of Italian violin making, thanks to its innovative design and proportions, the quality and the depth of sound, and the beautiful materials and finishes used to create it.Sf_Il Cremonese (6)

Many Sonus faber patents and technologies are implemented in Il Cremonese:

Stealth Reflex System – allowing for a reduction in the dimensions of the internal acoustic volume while providing distortion control, it utilises two orthogonal ports, one on the back for the midwoofer, and the other on the base, facing the floor, for the woofers and infrawoofers.

Z.V.T. (Zero Vibration Transmission) system – used for decoupling the speaker’s cabinet from the floor and the rest of the listening environment, this is implemented in a revolutionary way inside the floor spikes. This new system continues to use new, modern elastomers, and guarantees a further simplification in the construction and aesthetic lightness.

Upper and lower “Dampshelves” – two massive slabs of black brushed Avional, operating as mechanical energy dampers generated by Il Cremonese’s powerful drivers.

Staggered Low Frequencies Emission Technology” system – used for the first time since “the Sonus faber” project, it optimises the performance of the integrated infrawoofers.

The driver cones are designed entirely in-house, the tweeter is the Sonus faber Arrow Point DAD (Damped Apex Dome), the midrange is a Sonus faber M18 XTR-04, the woofers are the Sonus faber W18XTR-12 (a scaled-down version of the Lilium woofers), and the W22XTR-16 infrawoofers are a new project from the Arcugnano factory. The crossover network utilizes the innovative “Paracross topology” for superior results.Sf_Il Cremonese (5)

Il Cremonese is characterised by an innovative cabinet with five sides, a “Rhomboidal diamond design” which optimises the structural solidity of the wooden cabinets with a diamond shape Inspired by the shape of Lilium, Il Cremonese introduces clean lines and a, minimal, and sharp design. Sonus faber say ‘This new and atypical form represents an evolution towards technological and visual innovation, simultaneously maintaining the historic milestones that marked the history of violin making, as well as the history of the Sonus faber brand itself.’

Lacquered walnut wood, tempered glass, leather and brushed black aluminium are the materials used and Il Cremonese is available in the classical Sonus faber finishes of RED and WALNUT.Sf_Il Cremonese (2)

Il Cremonese will be available to non-US Sonus faber dealers and distributors in November 2015, and to US and Canadian dealers in early 2016. The suggested retail price is € 31250 pair (VAT not included).

Ministry of Sound today launches the new Audio M Wireless Speaker, a new audio device aimed at satisfying the many needs of today’s consumer of music and contemporary audio.

The new speaker comes in two versions: the Audio M (£149.99) a Bluetooth version offering apt-X Bluetooth, a True Wireless Stereo mode (in which you can pair two units to play your tunes in stereo), battery power for portability and added convenience, as well as the ability to remember the last seven devices it was paired with.

Then there’s the Audio M Plus (£199.99). This version adds full Wi-Fi and multi-room functionality to the Audio M’s list of attributes. As a result, Audio M Plus manages to combine a sonically high-performance yet compact and desktop-friendly design, with the ability to connect any number of units together as part of a cohesive, easy-to use multi- room music system, all controlled from the slick Ministry Audio app.MOS_speaker

Simply stream to Audio M Plus from your smartphone, tablet or any A2DP or DLNA devices, or from the internet via the Ministry Audio app. You can group speakers into up to eight groups, playing different songs to different groups while playing the same song to all the speakers in a single group.

In addition, the Audio M Plus – just like the Audio M – keeps convenience and portability front and centre. By offering the option of battery power as well as mains, the Audio M speakers make it easy for you to simply pick up your easily transported speaker and take it to a different room or, say, the garden.

Both Audio M and Audio M Plus have been sound-tuned by Ministry of Sound’s Ivor Novello-winning DJ and producer, Phil Faversham, who worked with his team of in-house sound engineers and DJs to ensure the speakers deliver a sound that’s powerful, dynamic, revealing and balanced – just like the sound system at the world-famous London club.

Both speakers offer a pleasing tap-and-swipe touch surface for controlling volume and skipping tracks, as well as NFC Bluetooth pairing.

Meanwhile, the Ministry Audio app (available now on iOS and Android) delivers world-class music streaming via Spotify Connect, as well as all eight channels of Ministry of Sound Radio (the world’s biggest dedicated dance music radio station), with more world-class streaming services scheduled to be added in the coming weeks.

The Ministry Audio app also offers users a unique, one-touch ‘Live From The Club’ feature: at the touch of a button, every Friday and Saturday night, you can live stream the party from London’s world-renowned Ministry of Sound nightclub, exactly as it happens.

Whitestone is the first platform for interactive music experiences. A place to create, collect, and truly experience music online. Whitestone has been created by a group of artists, designers and programmers with a vision to bring album art to the internet, using the medium to create special interactive editions of albums and videos. Streaming is just the beginning; they want to take it a step further.  One of the founders of Whitestone, Roey Tsemah told us:  ‘In 1939 Alex Steinweiss invented album artwork. Before he came up with the idea, records didn’t have any artwork, just a brown dust cover. The first album he illustrated made 800% more profit, it added value to the record and soon enough became an integral part of the culture of music. With the transition to MP3’s we lost the album, we lost the artwork, we were left with the cover and a tracklist. It’s about time we change that.’WS_Home_Steinweiss

‘We believe that true fans want to support artists. Our business model is based on the concept of the tip jar and fan contributions rather than advertisements. As a fan you can follow creators to get their feed. When you see something you like you can tip them – You decide how much, and your money goes directly to the person you intend to. Not only artists are creators – radio hosts and music bloggers for instance can get tipped as well, the stage is for everyone.’

UK based manufacturer Graham Slee is a name well known in audio circles and Graham has recently been in touchjazzclub_graham_slee_news with Hifi Pig to tell us about an interesting concept the company has hatched, to help their current customers and attract new ones. Whilst this isn’t news per se; it is certainly new to us and we thought it would be interesting for Hifi Pig’s readers.

The Owners Club Forum is basically a forum in support of the Graham Slee brand.  Graham wanted the forum to be a relaxed and respectful place for owners of his products to engage with himself and other owners.  The forum is used to educate and advise, sending out detailed information about Graham Slee products and announcing new products.  Market research is another key element as is sharing reviews of the products.  There is also DIY information demonstrating that Graham really knows his stuff when it comes to electronic design.  Non owners are welcome to join as they can then try out products through the loaners program and hopefully go on to be owners!  Members are signed up manually so that spammers are kept out and there is also a loyalty program that rewards active contributors to the site, the more you post the better discount you get.

The Loaners Program is part of the forum.  Graham has found volunteers to act as organisers of the program in the UK and Western Europe, the USA, Australia and Canada.  These volunteers are sent the full range of Graham Slee products to keep in their ‘toy Cupboard’.  The program is designed to be like a lending library so that people can try before they buy rather then buying a product cold, trying it and then returning it to try something else.  Graham argues that while the old way of doing things is completely within the consumer’s rights it is not the most efficient way of doing things, with the need to repackage items to then be resold as used items having an environmental impact. With the Loaner Program members contact the organiser for their region through the forum to put in their loan requests and then just pay for the item(s) to be shipped to them.  The general loan period is 2 weeks, after which the loaner sends the item back to their regional organiser and, if they are happy with the product, they can submit a review and of course go on to buy their own if they so wish.

At Hifi Pig we think that this is a great idea and wish Graham Slee and his team every success.

2015 : The year High End Munich turned Pink !

So, Stuart has filled you in on our adventures on the way to Munich.

LIN_High_End_INtro

Lin on the right with various members of the esteemed audio press.

We found ourselves at our hotel on Schillerstrasse, just a few minutes walk from the main train station.

At first glance this area is what might be described as ‘a bit dodgy’ ……there a more than a few ‘Gentleman’s Clubs’.

Stuart said that it might be fun to go and dance on a table but I didn’t think the regular clientele would appreciate that very much.

Actually the area is very safe, it’s a melting pot of different cultures and nationalities so it is lively, buzzy and there are lots of great places to eat.

We are really happy with our hotel, the H+ City Centre … the staff are friendly and efficient and the rooms comfortable and clean, we have managed to get ourselves a great base camp for this year’s High End Munich show.

Thursday dawns and after fortifying ourselves with a substantial breakfast we head off on the now familiar S and Ubahn route to the MOC and the show.

Now, we expected to run into lots of people that we know at the show this year but we were just not prepared for the overwhelming response that Hifi Pig got at the show …it seemed that everyone knew us.

This really was the year the High End show turned Hifi Pig Pink!

By the time we had checked our coats in we had already run into Norbert of Lehmann Audio and Armin from Avantgarde Acoustics but we have to dash for the first of many meetings with promises of meeting up later.

After the first appointment, which is the Devialet press conference (more from Stu on that later) we get the chance to really see some of the show proper.

My first impressions are that this is going to be a really big one.

There seem to be a lot of new (or new to me ) brands which I find very exciting …I always think that discovering something new at a show is one of the best bits, but I also love seeing what my favourite established brands have brought to the party.

Stay tuned for Bird’s Eye Views  a’plenty!
