Triangle Borea BR05 Brings Bigger Drivers To A £729 Speaker Pair

Triangle has expanded its Borea range with the BR05, a pair of large standmount speakers priced at £729. Their broad cabinets and contrasting front panels give them a retro look, while a newly developed 21cm driver handles bass and much of the music’s midrange.

These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier and a music source. For someone putting together a first substantial HiFi system, their size and supplied tilting bases offer an alternative to the usual slim floorstanding speaker.

Quick Reference

Product: Triangle Borea BR05 passive stereo speakers

Price: £729 / €749 / US$999 per pair

A Larger Speaker For Your Music

The BR05 is a two-way design. That means the musical signal is divided between two types of driver: the large cone covers bass and midrange, while the smaller tweeter reproduces high frequencies such as cymbals.

Triangle uses natural cellulose pulp for the larger cone and silk for the tweeter dome. The company’s aim is to combine substantial bass with clear voices and instruments. Its quoted frequency response is 42Hz–22kHz, although specifications alone do not tell you how a speaker will sound in your room.

Space And Position Matter

Each speaker weighs 14.6kg, so this is a substantial design despite its bookshelf classification. Measure your available space rather than assuming it will fit on a small shelf.

Two bass-reflex ports sit on the front. These openings work with the cabinet and driver to reinforce bass. Triangle says their position gives more flexibility near a rear wall, though room layout and placement will still affect the result.

The supplied bases angle the speakers towards the listener for low-level placement. Dedicated S03 stands are available separately, but are not included in the speaker price. Magnetic grilles can cover the drivers when preferred.

What You Need To Connect

An amplifier provides the power, with your turntable, CD player or streamer connected further upstream. Unlike active speakers, the BR05 does not contain its own amplifier, Bluetooth receiver or streaming system.

Inside the cabinet, bracing and Triangle’s Driver Vibration Absorption System are intended to reduce unwanted vibration. The rear terminals also allow bi-wiring or bi-amplification, but a conventional amplifier connection is enough to start using the speakers.

Price And Availability

The Triangle Borea BR05 is available to order at £729 per pair in the UK. European and US recommended prices are €749 and US$999 per pair. All five finishes come with removable magnetic grilles.

What The Terms Mean

Passive Speaker: A speaker that needs power from a separate amplifier.

Midrange: The central part of the audible frequency range, including much of the sound of voices and instruments.

Tweeter: The small driver responsible for high-frequency sound.

Bass Reflex: A speaker design using an opening in the cabinet to help reinforce low frequencies.
