Extra Bass Without A Separate Amplifier
Edifier has presented the MW6T compact powered subwoofer at IFA in Berlin. A subwoofer is a speaker made specifically for the lowest frequencies in music, films and games. Because the amplifier is built in, the MW6T does not need a separate power amplifier.
Edifier claims 210 watts RMS of amplification. RMS is the useful continuous power figure rather than a short peak measurement, although wattage alone does not tell us how deep, loud or controlled a subwoofer will sound.
Where A Subwoofer Fits
A subwoofer can extend a pair of smaller speakers that cannot reproduce much deep bass on their own. This can add weight to kick drums and electronic music as well as effects in films and games.
The source system needs a compatible subwoofer or line-level output. Setup also matters: the crossover, level and position must be adjusted so the subwoofer supports the main speakers rather than drawing attention to itself.
Room Compensation Explained
Edifier says the MW6T includes room acoustic compensation. Low frequencies interact strongly with walls, floors and room dimensions, sometimes creating boomy areas or weak spots. Room compensation uses measurement and digital adjustment to reduce some of these problems.
This does not remove the need to experiment with placement, but it may make the subwoofer easier to balance in a bedroom, living room or desktop setup.
