Goldfrapp have spent the past decade teasing us. Their 2002 debut ‘Felt Mountain’ is rightly regarded as indispensable, but since then the London duo have bounced uneasily between electro-pop, ambient melancholia and trip-hop without ever quite delivering the baroque masterpiece we know they’re capable of. Frustrating, yes, but on the strength of the leaked single “Drew” I pre-ordered ‘Tales of Us’ on vinyl; something I almost never do with new releases, the quality of small batches is too variable, but that’s another story entirely. A new Dutch hifi brand arrived on the market, called Simply Audio whose core business of is producing high quality Audio Cables.
Simply Audio’s Cadenza series of cables is made of silver and includes loudspeaker cables, two RCA interconnects and a digital cable. Termination is with Audio Note RCA’s or bananas but if clients prefer WBT or Furutech it is also possible this can be accommodated.
As well as manufacturing cables, Simply Audio were keen to tell us about ther other services which include:
A kit building services where Simply Audio builds kits for clients who can’t build these kits by themselves and are especially enthusiastic about the value of the Audio Note kits available.
A vinyl service where the company will help you get the very best from your analogue front end. “There is nothing better then Vinyl”, Dimitri van Hoven, founder and owner of Simply Audio says “but some older turntables benefit greatly by replacing the standard interlink with RCA’s and a decent interconnects” he added. Cartridge alignment is something Simply Audio also offer and they also sell cartridges from a carefully selected group of manufacturers.
Last but not least Simply Audio offers modifications such as capacitor and resistor upgrades to some brands of valve equipment including Audio Innovations.
UK loudspeaker manufacturer KEF held a series of events between October 1st and 7th called “KEF Week” and we thought it only right that we should send out a Hifi Pig scout to take a look at one of the events at Loud and Clear in Edinburgh. More »
AudioQuest contacted us to tell us about their six new subwoofer cables with a canine theme. The line begins with three models optimized for single-ended applications: Black Lab, Irish Red, and Boxer. Husky, Wolf and Wild Dog share the same Triple-Balanced Geometry as AudioQuest’s Rivers and Cosmic Series analogue interconnects, providing a separate ground-reference conductor for balanced applications with XLR plugs, and a lower impedance on ground for single-ended applications using RCA plugs.
AudioQuest’s Subwoofer Series starts with Black Lab’s Solid Long-Grain Copper (LGC) Conductors, with each successive model adding increasing amounts of silver plate; Wild Dog is the alpha with its Solid 100% Perfect-Surface Silver (PSS) Conductors.
Prices range from £29 for a 2m length of the Black Lab to £1289 for the same length of Wild Dog with lots of different lengths being available.
This, on the Righteous label, arrived in the post on Friday and come Friday night it was on constant repeat on the CD player. Northern Boys is an album crammed full of Northern Soul tunes made “famous” by clubs such as the Blackpool Mecca and Wigan Casino and it is a really infectious collection.
Most of the twenty six tunes herein were originally released in 1959 and 1961 on obscure 45s (remember those?) and will be nigh on impossible to source now and so perhaps just for the rarity value this album is worth having – but that’s missing the point a bit I think. More »
Cabasse, the French loudspeaker manufacturer, is introducing the Stream 1 and Stream Source wireless music streaming products. With the ability to stream from networks, tablets and phones and turn any connected USB drive into a DLNA server.
Stream 1 is a compact, standalone, streaming music playback system with built-in Cabasse speakers and amplifiers, that builds on the company’s first network music product, the Stream 3. Designed to be freestanding, either horizontally or vertically, or wall mounted, the pebble shaped 14cm x 46cm x 32cm (H W D) is available in glossy white or black.
Stream 1 plays music stored on a network, tablet or smartphone via Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Bluetooth, and is controlled by the Cabasse app for iOS or Android.
Built-in automatic DLNA server software enables any directly connected USB stick or hard drive to be made available to the whole network, for playback on any other Stream players, alleviating the necessity for complex server configuration.
The Stream Source allows people to take advantage of Cabasse’s streaming technology through an existing hi-fi system. The stand-alone unit, also pebble shaped and just 4cm x 23cm x 14cm (H W D) in size. Digital to analogue converters take the digital signal from the network in file formats from MP3 to 96kHz FLAC and present them to the hi-fi for playback through the existing speakers. As with the Stream 1, Bluetooth connectivity is possible with smartphones or tablets using the APTX codec for higher quality reproduction of the music stored on the device. Similarly, embedded DLNA software enables the music on any directly connected USB drive to be instantly made available across the network.
PricesMSRP (inc. VAT) Stream 1£499, Stream Source£299
Lipinski Sound, primarily known for use in recording and mastering studios, goes self-powered and upgradable for its 10th Anniversary with the unveiling of a new self-powered and upgradable loudspeaker system. The revised L-707A series of monitors are the latest development in a series of loudspeakers starting with Lipinski L-707.
L-700A Dual Power Amplifier and L-700B Power Amplifier ensure that each section of this modular speaker system will be powered by its own individual class-A amplifier (meaning that their Signature speaker system will now be driven by four amplifiers per channel) This is Lipinski’s newest Class AAB, all-discrete, dual-power amplifier based on low-feedback patented circuitry Lipinski Square OpAmps – unique in that, at no point does the audio signal pass through an integrated circuit, condenser, coil, or transformer.
Lipinski also have the Self-Powered True Reference monitor L-70 which is based on the same principles as it’s larger sibling.
Rotel have announced three new product launches in the US. These include Rotel’s first USB Digital-to-Analog Converter, a new Stereo Preamplifier with onboard DAC and two Class A/B Stereo Power Amplifiers.
RB-1582MKII Stereo Power Amplifier
The RB-1582MKII is Rotel’s largest stereo amplifier at 200 watts per channel that provides the massive current needed to drive the largest hi-fi systems.
The RB-1582MKII’s has a large toroidal transformer combined with a total of 60,000uF storage capacity in “slit foil” capacitors to provide completely stable power to the output stage. Both the left and right channel construction are laid out in a mono block design (after the toroidal transformer) and all grounding is terminated in a star pattern on a copper grounding plate to ensure low signal to noise. The output stage is a discrete design that consists of 10 high current bipolar transistors per channel.Input options consist of both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connectors.
The RB-1582 is available in Matte Black or Brushed Silver finish at a cost of €1599.
RB-1552MKII Stereo Power Amplifier
The RB-1552MKII is a 120-watt per channel class A/B amplifier with features that include an over-sized power supply featuring a low magnetic field toroidal transformer and high-current bipolar output transistors. The RB-1552MKII features independent left and right power rectification stages and decoupling, and is essentially a mono block design. Input options are balanced XLR or unbalanced RCA connectors.
The RB-1552MKII is available in Matte Black or Brushed Silver finish at €999
Both analogue and digital sources have been given equal consideration as today’s listener often has several digital sources, but may also enjoy formats like vinyl LPs and hence the preamp has a moving magnet phonostage as well as four digital inputs (2 co-ax and 2 optical), plus the PC-USB on the rear panel, handles digital sources up to 24/192 resolution. A Wolfson stereo D/A converter handles critical conversion from digital data to analogue. Analog inputs include balanced XLR connectors in addition to four pair of conventional RCA inputs.
The RC-1570 is available in Matte Black or Brushed Silver finish at a price of €999.
RDD-1580 Digital to Analogue Converter
The RDD-1580 uses dual Wolfson WM8740s in a complementary configuration which Rotel says reduces noise and distortion well beyond what a single converter can provide.
A front panel USB input supports Apple iPod®, iPhone®, and iPad® as well as streaming via Bluetooth with the included adapter. The rear panel PC-USB input will support files up to 24 bit/192kHz in asynchronous mode. Two sets of rear panel RCA-style coaxial and TOSlink optical digital inputs are optimized for LPCM data streams. This includes CD’s 16-bit/44.1 kHz standard to high definition sources with 24-bit/192 kHz audio data.
The RDD-1580 provides both single-ended and balanced outputs with RCA and XLR connections respectively.
The RDD-1580 is available in Matte Black or Brushed Silver finish at €799.
Using trickle down technology from Hypex Ncore and Merrill Audio’s VERITAS Monoblocks, the new THOR Monoblock Power Amplifiers will be introduced at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, room 582.
The amplifiers are rated at a power of 400 watts into 4ohms. The sleek looking Monoblocks, priced at $4,000 a pair, come in Piano Black Gloss in a billet Aluminium Chassis. Using components from Cardas, Furutech and Triode Wire Labs, the THOR Monoblocks are “excellent for the discerning Audiophile” who wants a stereo amp or people who need to bi-amp and tri-amp their audio system and to use it for home Theatre.
NAD have been around the hifi industry for the last 4o year but until now they haven’t created a headphone. The company’s first headphone comes in the shape of their Viso HP50 an over ear design that retails for £250.
“The phones sit nicely on the ear and are comfortable to wear over extended listening periods and the headband is adjustable so those with overgrown bonces (like me) needn’t worry – though the headband only actually touches the head at the very top which is a bit weird and has the effect of making you look like a Cyberman from Dr Who.”
Roksan Audio have been a major player in the world of high fidelity music reproduction since the introduction of theiriconic Xerxes turntable. Here we look at the company’s latest offering the Oxygene Amplifier and the Oxygene CD Player.
Design-wise the Oxygene products are a departure from the myriad black boxes that we tend to see. Find out if the new Roksan kit lives up to their looks.
“A lot of new kit arrives here for review and opening the box kit comes in can sometimes be a bit of a let down. When you buy anything I believe that if you’ve spent a good deal of money on it then you need to experience that “Christmas Morning” effect – you wouldn’t expect to spend several thousands of pounds on a watch and expect it to arrive in a brown paper bag would you! Most product comes well packed, some less so. Roksan have clearly gone to a great deal of trouble when thinking about the packaging for the Oxygene products.”
Following the success of their first range of in-ear headphones, the EB-50s, Musical Fidelity has added an overhead headphone to their repertoire.
Musical Fidelity say the new MF-100s provide clear, natural sound combined with lightness, comfort and durability.
The cable includes an in-line mic/mute control so that users with smartphones can take calls and the ear pieces can be rotated and folded in when not in use. The MF-100s drive units have been designed from the ground up to give a “very flat and wide frequency response with low distortion”.
The Musical fidelity MF-100 headphones are available for £119
