Fosi Audio DAP Neo Puts Your Music Library Back In Your Pocket
Fosi Audio has introduced the DAP Neo, a small portable music player with a control wheel, wired headphone socket and Bluetooth. It plays music files from a memory card, giving you a separate device for listening without having to keep your phone in your hand.
The starting EU price is €89.99, putting it within reach of someone building a first portable listening setup. You will need your own music files and headphones; this is a file player rather than a device for installing streaming apps.

A Small Player With Physical Controls
The Neo has a metal body, an anti-glare glass rear panel, side buttons and a wheel for navigating your music. It measures 97 × 47 × 10.6mm and weighs no more than 75g.
Its screen is a 2.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 320 × 240. Fosi has kept the interface simple, with the emphasis on browsing and playing a music collection.

Wired And Wireless Listening
Inside is a Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC, which converts digital music into the signal used by wired headphones. Fosi quotes 129mW of output power.
Supported formats include MP3, FLAC, WAV, APE, M4A and DSD. Bluetooth is also included, although its listed codec is SBC; the lossless-file support should not be confused with lossless Bluetooth transmission.
A USB charging and data cable, two screen protectors and an instruction manual are supplied. Music files bought as downloads or copied from your own collection can be loaded onto the card. Offline downloads saved inside a streaming subscription app are not ordinary music files you can transfer to this type of player.
What The Terms Mean
DAP: Digital audio player, a device dedicated to playing music files.
DAC: Digital-to-analogue converter, which turns digital music into an electrical audio signal.
Lossless: A file format that keeps the audio information without the data reduction used by formats such as MP3.
SBC: A standard Bluetooth audio codec. It compresses audio for wireless transmission.
